HICKORY – An ugly collapse by the defense and the bullpen cost the Piedmont Boll Weevils on Monday night in a 6-4 South Atlantic League baseball loss to Hickory.
Piedmont got another great start from pitcher Carlos Silva who gave up only one earned run in seven innings, and held a 4-2 lead when he was relieved in the eighth.
But Weevil relievers Jonathan Rose and Jeremy Wedel couldn’t close things out. Hickory scored four times in the bottom of the eighth with the aid of crucial errors by Jerry Connell and Uriel Casillas.
It was a tough loss for the Weevils, who hammered the ball around L.P. Frans Stadium. Piedmont had three homers and four doubles among its 10 hits.
Eric Schreimann returned to the lineup with a bang – driving in three runs with a pair of homers. Connell hit a solo blast for the other Weevil run.
Piedmont (2-2) and Hickory (4-1) will play again tonight in Hickory. Greg Kubes (8-5) will pitch for Piedmont.
