McCanless losing pro; Cobb, Sprinkle lead tourney

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

McCanless Golf Club is losing its popular pro, Bob Timm, after almost a decade. His resignation is effective Thursday.

Timm, a 38-year-old native of Appleton, Minn., has been pro at the public course for nine and a half years, starting in 1990. He came to McCanless after assistant pro positions at two courses in Florida and Stanly County Country Club in Badin.

Timm and partner Mike Apone are in a partnership at Carolina Golf Mart and Practice Center, which opened eight months ago. Timm will devote all of his time to the new business.

‘‘I’ve had good friendships with the staff and people that play out there,’’ said Timm of McCanless. ‘‘It’s kind of like a second home to me. It’s a tough decision.’’

Timm started playing golf as a youngster in Minnesota, then went to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich.

‘‘At that time, it was the only school in the country directed toward becoming a member of the PGA. Now there’s four, soon to be six,’’ Timm pointed out.

After graduation, he worked in Florida before coming to North Carolina.

Timm said of going into the new business full-time, ‘‘I’m excited. It’s fun working for yourself and enjoyable. I’m just trying to help other people enjoy the game of golf and get started in the game of golf. I’ll be giving lessons and be involved in every aspect of the business.’’

There are other driving ranges in the county at the Country Club of Salisbury, Corbin Hills Golf Club and Crescent Golf Club, but Carolina Golf Mart is the only one open at night. Timm says he’s been amazed at the nighttime business.

‘‘I think it’s something that Salisbury needed. It’s evident at night, if you see how many people are hitting balls, especially beginners and people that don’t even play golf. ... The range business is getting bigger. More and more people are coming out that we’ve never seen before. In the shop, sales have gone further than we expected in the first year. We’ve increased inventory tremendously,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s still a lot of stuff that we’re looking into doing that will make it a more enjoyable place for everybody.’’

As for working with Apone, his friend since 1994, he said, ‘‘I think Mike and myself complement each other in good ways.’’

Timm’s replacement has not yet been named.

Cobb, Sprinkle top seeds in McCanless Four-Ball

The 345th annual Grady B. McCanless Four-Ball Tournament got under way Saturday, when the first round of match play began.

The teams of Todd Eller-Jonathan McCullough and Joey Boley-Chad Clayton shared medalist honors with 3-under-par 67s.

Richard Cobb and Thad Sprinkle, defending champions, are top-seeded, while Eller and McCullough are No. 2 and Boley and Clayton No. 3.

The first round of match play ends July 4, the second round July 18, the third round July 25 and the finals Aug. 1.

HOLE IN ONES: Randy Aigner of Salisbury aced the par-3, 178-yard No. 5 hole at Corbin Hills with a 5-iron. He was playing with Steve Wyatt, Charles Lockert and Dan Doiron. ... Bud Hulsey of Granite Quarry traveled to Iowa for his hole in one, making it at the Des Moines Country Club, which will be the site of the 1999 U.S. Senior Open. Hulsey, who has a new job in Wisconsin, was on a business trip. He hit a 7-iron to ace the par-3, 157-yard No. 9 hole. Witnesses were Steve Dolezel and Dale Humisted. The rest of Hulsey’s family plans to move to Wisconsin later.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: The Country Club of Salisbury’s men’s club championship and Men’s President Cup will be held July 3-5.

John Henderlite will be going after a record 14th club championship. He’s won four of those titles in the 1990s – 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1998. Either Elliot Gealy (1994, 1996 and 1997) or Henderlite has won during the past six years.

The women’s club championship, with three-time champion Patti Glassgow defending, isn’t scheduled until Aug. 17 and 19.

THIRD IN NATIONALS: Catawba Valley Community College’s golf team recently finished third in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Golf Championships at Riverwood Golf Club in Clayton.

Ryan Honeycutt of Salisbury is a member of the CVCC team, along with Sterlyn Mitchell of Wilkesboro, Sumner Alford of Fuquay-Varina, Joe Warren of Lenoir and Doyle Wyant of Vale. Alford and Warren earned second-team All-America honors, finishing seventh and 13th, respectively.

‘‘I am very proud of these players and their accomplishments at the national tournament as well as through the year,’’ said CVCC coach Mark Poarch. ‘‘They deserve to be considered one of the best teams in the country.’’

Honeycutt was an outstanding golfer on Salisbury High School’s state championship teams before going to CVCC.

SALISBURY NATIVE: Tripp Isenhour of Orlando, Fla., a Salisbury native who starred in golf at Salisbury High School, will be playing close to home in July.

Isenhour, on the Nike Tour full-time this season, will be playing in the Nike Greensboro Open July 5-11 at Sedgefield Country Club.

The field includes 46 players who have won one or more Nike events and four who have won PGA events. Steve Gotsche, two-time Nike winner this season, is entered.

The four PGA winners are Stan Utley (1989 Chattanooga Classic), Fred Wadsworth (1986 Southern Open), Gene Sauers (1986 Bank of Boston Classic and 1989 Hawaiian Open), and Ken Green (1985 Buick Open, 1986 The International, 1988 Canadian Open and 1989 Kmart Greater Greensboro Open).

JUNIOR WINNERS: Scott Young, Wesley Love and Jonathan Dwiggins were winners in a Crescent/McCanless summer junior golf program tournament at McCanless last week.

Love won the 12-14 division with a 79, while Nick Medinger was second at 82 and Michael Gegorek third at 88.

Dwiggins shot a 43 for nine holes and won the 11&under age group. Andy Smith and Daniel Medley finished second and third, respectively, at 47 and 48.

The next tournament in the program will be Monday at Crescent Golf Club.
