McCanless Golf Club is losing its popular pro, Bob Timm, after almost a decade. His
resignation is effective Thursday. Timm, a 38-year-old native of Appleton, Minn., has been pro at the public
course for nine and a half years, starting in 1990. He came to McCanless after assistant
pro positions at two courses in Florida and Stanly County Country Club in Badin.
Timm and partner Mike Apone are in
a partnership at Carolina Golf Mart and Practice Center, which opened eight months ago.
Timm will devote all of his time to the new business.
Ive had good
friendships with the staff and people that play out there, said Timm of
McCanless. Its kind of like a second home to me. Its a tough
decision.
Timm started playing golf as a
youngster in Minnesota, then went to Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich.
At that time, it was
the only school in the country directed toward becoming a member of the PGA. Now
theres four, soon to be six, Timm pointed out.
After graduation, he worked in
Florida before coming to North Carolina.
Timm said of going into the new
business full-time, Im excited. Its fun working for yourself and
enjoyable. Im just trying to help other people enjoy the game of golf and get
started in the game of golf. Ill be giving lessons and be involved in every aspect
of the business.
There are other driving ranges in
the county at the Country Club of Salisbury, Corbin Hills Golf Club and Crescent Golf
Club, but Carolina Golf Mart is the only one open at night. Timm says hes been
amazed at the nighttime business.
I think its
something that Salisbury needed. Its evident at night, if you see how many people
are hitting balls, especially beginners and people that dont even play golf. ... The
range business is getting bigger. More and more people are coming out that weve
never seen before. In the shop, sales have gone further than we expected in the first
year. Weve increased inventory tremendously, he said.
Theres still a lot of stuff that were looking into doing that will
make it a more enjoyable place for everybody.
As for working with Apone, his
friend since 1994, he said, I think Mike and myself complement each other in
good ways.
Timms replacement has not
yet been named.
