Area utility companies will offer some relief to older residents who suffer from the
sweltering summer heat an electric fan. Operation Fan/Heat Relief, a special
emergency project operated by the N.C. Division of Aging, is beginning its 13th year.
Duke Power and Carolina Power and
Light each donated $20,000 to the fund. North Carolina Power gave $2,500, and Valassis
Communications provided $500.
Rowan County will get $775 of Duke
Powers contribution. The countys Senior Services department will dispense the
fans to those who qualify.
To receive fans, local seniors:
- Must be residents of Rowan County
60 or older.
- May not have received a fan through
the program in the past two years.
- Must have a need.
Local Senior Services officials
say this program can be a lifesaver.
This program is very
important for people who dont have any means of heating or air
conditioning, said Peggy Whitley of Senior Services. Some
residents have existing health problems and need help with heat relief. This offers them
that help.
Fans will be given on a
first-come, first-served basis at Senior Services, 1120-A S. Boundary St. Office hours are
Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
