Boll Weevils win on Baisley’s three-hitter

BY RONNIE GALLAGHER
SALISBURY POST

061299 Jason JohnsonKANNAPOLIS – The Piedmont Boll Weevils’ bonus baby received an extra bonus Friday night: some early offensive production.

And 19-year old Brad Baisley took it from there, wowing the Asheville Tourists and a crowd of almost 3,000 with a three-hit shutout and a 3-0 Weevils victory.

In a season of dominating pitching, the 6-10 Baisley, Philadelphia’s third pick in last year’s draft, dominated like no other has this season. He allowed three cheap singles, only one out of the infield, and was on top of his game.

So much so that the contest didn’t go two hours. Catcher Jeremy Salazar said he knew early a shutout was in the works.

‘‘You felt it after the third inning,’’ said the former Florida State star. ‘‘He was working quickly and they were popping up first pitches. Everything was working tonight.’’
