Carson Herndon can claim at age 6 something that eludes most golfers all their lives: a hole in one.
On Friday, Carson, son of Mike and Carol Herndon, aced the 72-yard, par-three eighth hole at Salisbury’s Crescent Golf Club. He used a pitching wedge from the red tees – designated for women and children – while playing with his father.
‘‘You were screaming hole-in-one, hole-in-one!’’ Carson said as his dad described how the ball hit on the fringe of the green, rolled up and hit the pin and fell in the hole.
As soon as it went in, ‘‘we started high-fiving,’’ said Mike Herndon, who’s head baseball coach at Davie County High School. He and Carson play three or four times a week during the summer.
Carson’s been playing on golf courses since he was 4, but his dad said they spend a good bit of time on the driving range practicing, too. Carson already can drive the ball 150 yards or so, said his proud dad.
Herndon remembers one other time that Carson nearly nailed a hole-in-one, missing by about 6 inches.
Carson, sporting a University of North Carolina cap and a tan toned on many a fairway, barely reaches his father’s belt buckle. He’s scheduled to go to golf camp this summer, but so far his only lessons have come from dad. He’s not likely to find too many others at camp who can claim an ace already.
