COLUMBIA, S.C. The odds against the Piedmont Boll Weevils scoring 13 runs in one
baseball game are only slightly better than the ones you get in Ed McMahons
sweepstakes. But
thats exactly what happened on Thursday night. The Weevils scored 13 runs. Not in a
week not in a series. In just nine innings. And in so doing, they stomped all over
first-place Columbia 13-6.
The Weevils scored five times in
the top of the first and never looked back.
Alejandro Giron drove in four
runs, while Alex Fajardo and Nate Espy knocked in three apiece.
Giron, Espy and Jeremy Salazar
homered.
The Weevils piled up 16 hits.
Giron had four, while Fajardo had three. Jason Johnson, Jorge Padilla and Espy banged out
two hits each.
The winning pitcher was Greg
Kubes, who had to be the most shocked person in the stadium at the sudden outpouring of
offensive support.
Kubes, who made the South Atlantic
League All-Star game, went five innings and allowed only one earned run. Francisco Montero
and Jonathan Rose finished off the Bombers.
Piedmont is 30-24, 2 1/2 games
behind Columbia, which is 33-22.
The teams play again tonight. |
