Stroke of good fortune Davie man says stroke team, experimental drug saved his life

BY NATASHA ASHE
SALISBURY POST

Harvey Pulliam is glad to be alive and well.

After suffering a stroke on Palm Sunday, he says he has no doubt Rowan Regional Medical Center’s phenomenal Stroke Team and the trial stroke drug they administered had a lot to do with his successful recovery.

‘‘I know it did,’’ Pulliam says from his Davie County home. ‘‘If it hadn’t been for their quick response, I don’t know what kind of condition I would be in today.’’

Less than two weeks after his release from the hospital, the retired PPG mechanic, was again fishing and taking care of his tomato plants.

Lillian Pulliam describes the day her husband began to display apparent stroke symptoms. A nurse at Rowan Regional for more than 20 years, Lillian said she immediately recognized the signs and got her husband to Rowan Regional.

‘‘He couldn’t use his left hand,’’ Lillian recalls. ‘‘His speech started to slur and his mouth twisted. I knew something was wrong. I knew he had suffered a stroke and needed to go to the hospital as soon as possible.’’

‘‘I couldn’t hold my left hand out or walk,’’ Pulliam added while demonstrating as he had that evening.
