Dog killings a mystery

8 animals mauled to death; officials not ruling anything out

BY NATASHA ASHE
SALISBURY POST

Mysterious dog killings in the west Rowan area have left Rowan County Animal Control officials baffled.

Even with autopsy results of the latest mysterious animal attack in hand, animal control officers still aren’t sure what or who is killing dogs in the Woodleaf area.

‘‘We do know that the incidents happened rather quickly because there has been no evidence of a prolonged struggle or sounds to alert neighbors,’’ said Environmental Health Supervisor Clarence Fox. ‘‘We also know most of the attacks have occurred at night or early in the morning.’’

Though officials won’t say if what or who is killing that area’s dogs, they will say: ‘‘We’re not ruling anything out,’’ Fox repeated.

At least five dogs have been confirmed dead and three more reported killings – bringing the total up to 8 – near Joe Summers and Geter Roads since May 9.
