Dear Mommy and Daddy: I love you

Granite Quarry kindergartners send parents a message to remember

 BY SUSAN DICKERSON
SALISBURY POST

‘‘I love Mommy and Daddy because they cook for me.’’

‘‘I love Mommy and Daddy because they do stuff for me.’’

‘‘I love Mommy and Daddy because they love me.’’

Those are just some of the reasons Cathye Hiatt’s kindergarten students gave for why they love their mommys and daddys.

Each student gave his or her reason in the ‘‘Dear Mom and Dad’’ video made by a volunteer parent, Kathy Shuping.

This is the third time Shuping and her husband have done this, each time for their child’s kindergarten class. The video is a conglomeration of special events during the year and a section where each student tells why they love their parents.

Take all that, set it to music, splice it, give each parent a copy and you have the makings of a tear-jerker parents can keep forever.

All the parents came for an unveiling of the video, and Shuping presented each parent with a copy of the class video.

Parents ‘‘were very appreciative,’’ Hiatt said. ‘‘They were just very thankful that someone had been able to video things that had happened throughout the year.

‘‘There were things that some parents had not been able to come to, and it’s a good way for the kids to remember their kindergarten friends.’’

Shuping said she spent 15 hours splicing the video. That’s not counting taping time or the time spent viewing the original tapes to find the pieces of video she wanted.

Shuping is a former fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Erwin.

‘‘Kids love their parents,’’ she says, ‘‘but a lot of times students didn’t show their parents the love they had for them. When your kids get up to middle school, they think it’s a childish thing to do. It’s a special memory for all the parents.’’

This way, parents know their children love them, and if they ever doubt it, they can go back and look.

So how did parents react to the video?

‘‘You need tissues to watch it,’’ Shuping said.
