The Salisbury Post honors 24 graduating Rowan-Salisbury and Kannapolis City seniors, four
from each school, for their overall academic achievement. The students named in the list receive the
honor from points earned for class rank, SAT scores and advanced courses.
This year, those students are:
A.L. Brown
Emily F. Griggs, daughter of
Farrar and Cindy Griggs and Peggy Griggs, of 1600 Meadow Ave., of Kannapolis, is projected
to graduate fourth in her class.
She has participated in Fellowship
of Christian Athletes, varsity softball, basketball, Interact Club, National Honors
Society, International Club and student council for four years.
She has served as secretary of the
Anchor Club, student body vice president, band front flag corps member and Quiz Bowl
captain.
She also is a member of
Blackwelder Park Baptist Church.
Griggs plans to attend the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in journalism.
Heath Correll Leggett, son of John
and Cindy Leggett, of 714 Carson Court, Kannapolis, is projected to graduate fourth in his
class.
He participated in varsity
basketball, tennis, various clubs, volunteer work, church youth group and mission team. He
also served as senior class president.
He received scholarships from
NROTC and N.C. Merit Award.
He plans to attend Tulane
University.
Lauren Brooke Sloop, daughter of
Danny H. and Carla K. Sloop (deceased), of 6070 Old Beatty Ford Road, Rockwell, is
projected to graduate second in her class.
She participated in the Interact
Club, the Anchor club, Quiz Bowl, the Computer Club, S.A.V.E., student council and
National Honors Society.
She has received scholarships from
Frayley Business at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, from Eunice Riggins ADK
and Office Professionals.
Sloop plans to attend UNCCs
business honors program.
Brandon M. Williams, son of Randy
and Susan Williams, of 2007 Fairfax St., Kannapolis, has a projected class rank of first.
Williams participated in varsity
golf, National Honor Society, Interact Club and Math Club. He served as junior class
president and was a Boys State Delegate.
He turned down a Hankins
Scholarship to Wake Forest but also received scholarships from North Carolina Food Dealers
Association and Pillowtex Corp.
He plans to attend the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and study biology. He hopes to enter into a school of
medicine after college graduation.
East Rowan
Justin Campbell, son of Scott and
Elizabeth Campbell, of 606 Woodland Drive, Rockwell, is projected to graduate third in his
class.
The National Honors Society
president also participated in mens tennis, advanced Spanish Club, Future Business
Leaders of American as secretary, Sigma Phi Gamma, student council and Academic
Competition Team.
She has received scholarships from
the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and from Salisbury Rotary Club.
She plans to major in pre-medicine
at UNC-Wilmington followed by medical school and a career as a laser surgeon.
Bridget Elise Cox, daughter of
Gary and Lugene Cox, of 705 N. Main St., Granite Quarry, is projected to graduate first in
her class.
She has studied dance for 13 years
at Salisbury School of Ballet and N.C. School of the Arts including ballet, tap and jazz.
She has worked with Piedmont
Players Community Theatre and Catawba College. She has played in the percussion section of
band for four years and was the percussion captain her junior year.
She worked part-time at the N.C.
Transportation Museum.
She has been actively involved in
the French Club and Sigma Phi Gamma.
She has received scholarships from
East Carolina University, Elks Club and Rotary.
She also received the
Marley-Berger Fine Arts Scholarship and was a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Cox plans to attend East Carolina
University to major in dance with the goal of professional ballerina in a dance company.
Jill Aglaia Fowler, daughter of
Gail Fowler and the late Walter Fowler, of P.O. Box 414, Faith, is projected to graduate
fourth in her class.
Voted Most likely to
succeed in her senior class, Fowlers honors include Civitan Scholar,
Tandy Scholar, N.C. Scholar, Presidents Education Award, honor graduate, Girls
State, Whos Who in Academics.
The president of Students Against
Drunk Driving served as secretary of the organization last year.
Other leadership positions she has
served in are president of the French Club this year and secretary last year and band drum
major.
She also belonged to Future
Business Leaders of America, Sigma Phi Gamma and National Honors Society.
She has studied piano for 10 years
and is a member of Shiloh UCC where she serves as pianist for the youth choirs.
Scholarships she has won are the
Jerry Peck Memorial Science Scholarship, Mary Rose Mills Memorial Scholarship, Robert C.
Byrd Honors Scholarship and the SAT Achievement Award.
She plans to attend UNC-CH and
pursue a double major in biology and chemistry. She then hopes to attend medical school
and become a specialized physician.
Lindsey Michelle Rich, daughter of
Curtis and Leslie Rich, of 1011 Raney St., Faith, is projected to graduate second in her
class.
She competed in varsity
volleyball, basketball and soccer. She was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes
and the Spanish Club.
The National Honors Society vice
president, also volunteered at Rowan Helping Ministries soup kitchen and competed on
the Academic Competition team.
She interned at Centralina
Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine.
She has secured scholarships at
UNC-CH and University of North Carolina at Raleigh. Other scholarships she has won include
the Jean Fisher Poole Memorial Scholarship, Eunice Riggins Memorial Scholarship and the
SAT Achievement award.
She plans to attend Duke
University and major in biology.
North High
Andrew Thomas Caldwell, son of
Tommy and Darlene Caldwell, of 6310 Fox Trace, is expected to graduate third in his class.
The vice-president of National
Honors Society, he also served as district project chairman to the Key Club and as
associate editor for the yearbook. He ran cross country and participated in swimming,
track, and art. He also held a part-time job at Innes Street Drug.
He has received a scholarship from
Salisbury-Rowan Merchants Association.
After graduation, he plans to
attend N.C. School of the Arts where he will major in costume design.
Melissa Nichole Johnston, daughter
of Todd and Gail Johnston, of 150 Leonard Road, is projected to graduate eighth in her
class.
She has participated in softball,
Active Christian Teens, French Club, Anchor Club, marching band, National Honors Society
and yearbook.
She plans to go to N.C. State and
become a prosecuting attorney.
Tronda Antionette Lee, daughter of
Barbara Hargrove and Henry C. Lee, of 307 S. Whitehead Ave., Spencer, is expected to
graduate second in her class.
She served as president of
National Honors Society, as secretary/treasurer of student government and Spanish Club
president. She captained basketball and worked as statistician for track and field. She
also was ad editor for yearbook.
She has received a grant from
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
She plans to major in computer
science at N.C. State.
Ashley Brooke Mills, daughter of
Gary and Peggy Mills, of 804 N. Rowan Ave. Ext., of Spencer, is projected to graduate
first in her class.
As student body president, she
also served as president of Octagon Club and Spanish Club.
She reported for National Honors
Society. She also participated in Key Club, Junior Civitans, yearbook, cross country,
swimming and served as the In-Sync reporter to the Post.
She has won scholarships from the
Optimist Club and National Starch.
She plans to study marine biology
at UNC-W.
Salisbury High
Norman Clark, son of Norman R.
Clark Jr. and Ellen T. Huffman, of 114 S. Milford Dr., is expected to graduate first in
his class.
He participated in student
government, tennis and sailing.
He is a Morehead and Coca-Cola
scholarship recipient.
He plants to attend Pacific Crest
Outward Bound School and UNC-CH.
Justin Daniel Cunningham, son of
Dean and Betsy Cunningham, of 347 Richmond Road, is expected to graduate second in his
class.
He participated in tennis, cross
country and served as the school newspapers editor.
He is a Morehead Scholarship
recipient.
After graduation, he plans to
attend Hurricane Islands Outward Bound School and then onto UNC-CH.
Robin Denise Jacobs, daughter of
Jeffrey and Marie Jacobs, of 408 Windsor Drive, is projected to graduate third in her
class.
She participated in National
Honors Society, Scared Heart Catholic Youth Group, tutoring, cross country her freshman
and sophomore years, soccer, Drama Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
She also served as a leader in
Latin Club as president and Junior Civitans as secretary. She interned at Rowan Regional
Medical Center in Fast Track. She also took piano lessons for eight years and tutored.
She held a part-time job at the
Daily Grind.
She has claimed $1,800 in
scholarships, $800 from the Hazel Goodman Scholarship and $1,000 from the Rotary
Scholarship.
Jacobs plans to attend Boston
College and major in biology and a pre-med program.
Jessica Robin Kersey, daughter of
Robin and Rip Kersey, of 720 W. Henderson St., is projected to graduate fourth in her
class.
She participated in National
Honors Society, Junior Civitan, Science Club, Teens with a Mission, and First Presbyterian
Church. She served as her homeroom representative on the Student Government Association
and as committee chair of the Fund Raising Committee and vice-president of the senior
class.
She has received Salisbury
Highs PTA Apple Fund Scholarship.
She plans to attend UNC-CH and
major in business. With her bachelors degree in hand, she then plans to attend law
school.
South Rowan
Ann Langford, daughter of Andy and
Sally Langford, of 511 W. Ketchie St., China Grove, is expected to graduate first in her
class.
She participated in Spanish Club,
tennis, Speech and Debate Club, National Honors Society, Interact Club, Bible Club,
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, piano, church youth group and community service.
She plans to attend Duke
University and is undecided on her major.
Garrett Matthew Raper, son of
Garry and Debbie Raper, of 1910 Stirewalt Road, China Grove, is projected to graduate
second in his class.
He wrestled and participated in
Spanish Club and National Honors Society.
He plans to attend N.C. State and
study either chemical or mechanical engineering curriculum.
Michael Simpson, son of Phil and
Peggy Simpson, of 2335 Brown Road, China Grove, is expected to graduate third in his
class.
He played on the golf and soccer
teams. He participated in Truth Seekers Christian Breakfast Club, Future Farmers of
America, Student Council, Speech and Debate Club and National Honors Society. He also
served as vice president of Junior Civitans.
He plans to major in business
management and marketing at Wake Forest University.
Carmen Watson, daughter of Jenelle
Burke and Steve Watson, of 821 Cruise Road, is projected to graduate 10th in her class.
She participated in Theatre Club
and tutored.
She has received the Teaching
Fellows Scholarship to Appalachian University.
She plans to attend a four-year
college.
West Rowan
John David Hurst, son of Theresa
and David Hurst, of 217 Cedarwood Drive, is expected to graduate second in his class.
Besides serving as senior class
president, he also participated in Quiz Bowl for three years, his last as co-captain. His
team also brought home the county championship this year.
He also participated in ACE-Drama
Troop, outdoor track, indoor track, Art Club, West Rowan Crazies, Key Club, Junior
Civitan, National Honors Society and Boys State.
Hurst volunteered at the
Rowan-Salisbury Schools Exceptional Children Department and Brian Center Nursing Homes.
He also is a confirmed member of
Sacred Heart Church.
His awards include first place at
RASGAF County Drama Competition, third place in West Rowans art show, Advanced
Placement Scholar with distinction, the spirit award for Indoor Track, and he was a
Morehead Scholarship nominee.
He has won scholarships from
Julian C. Johnston, the Salisbury-Rowan Merchant Association, the Ralph W. Ketner Family
Academic Achievement Scholarship.
He plans to attend UNC-CH and
major in political science.
Adam Hall, son of David and Tina
Hall, of 2955 Hall Road, Mt. Ulla, is expected to graduate fifth in his class.
He has participated in cross
country, indoor track, tennis, National Honors Society and Key Club. He also helped build
Habitat for Humanity Homes.
As a leader, he served as
president of the Thyatira Presbyterian Church as well as on the churchs Board of
Elders.
He also tutored fourth graders at
Mt. Ulla Elementary through a church tutorial program.
The West Rowan PTA has given Hall
a scholarship.
He plans to attend UNC-CH and
major in business or history.
Caroline Sheffield Thomas,
daughter of Danny and Cynthia Thomas, of 570 Timberlane Trail, is projected to graduate
fourth in her class.
She participated in the
girls varsity tennis team, girls soccer and National Honors Society. She
participated in student government all four years and served as the Key Club president.
She worked on the yearbook staff for three years, the last of which she served as editor
in chief. She participated in St. Johns Youth Group for four years and served as
president her last year.
She has won scholarships from
Salisbury Civitans, Time Warner Cable, Egbert L. Davis Jr. Scholarship and Robert P.
Caldwell Merit Scholarship.
She plans to attend Wake Forest
University and major in either biology or psychology with the ultimate plan of pursuing a
career in medicine.
Brian Tajlili, son of Dr. Morteza
and Lois Tajlili, of 650 Timberlane Trail, is expected to graduate first in his class.
He ran on the cross country team,
indoor track team, outdoor track team and participated in Quiz Bowl, Key Club and ACE.
He served in leadership positions
as co-president of the Junior Classical League and secretary of National Honors Society.
He also participated in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Youth Group.
Tajlili attended the 1999 Intel
International Science and Engineer Fair and N.C. Governors School. He is a Xerox
award winner. He also is a Claire Grisset Science Award winner and an AP Scholar.
He has won a scholarship from
National Starch, too.
He plans to attend Duke University

Keppel Auditorium on the Catawba
College campus will be the scene of almost around-the-clock graduation ceremonies
beginning tonight and running throughout the day and into the evening Friday.
A total of 954 seniors from
Rowan-Salisbury Schools five high schools will receive their diplomas in
commencement exercises that will be videotaped by Time Warner Cable for broadcasting
later.
Another seven local seniors will
graduate from North Hills Christian School at 7 p.m. May 28 at Franklin Baptist Church.
And approximately 170 seniors at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis are scheduled to
graduate May 26.
