Weevils beat DelMarva

By   DAVID SHAW

SALISBURY POST

KANNAPOLIS – Even the tone deaf heard the music the Boll Weevils produced Thursday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

While the Blues Brothers entertained a paid crowd of 1,300-plus, Piedmont aired 15 of its greatest hits in a 7-2 South Atlantic League victory over Delmarva.

‘‘We all kind of busted out tonight,’’ manager Ken Oberkfell said after the Weevils (13-13) pulled back to .500. ‘‘They’re still pulling off the ball a little bit, but once they realize what they’re doing, good things are going to happen.’’

Good things came in a variety of packages for third-place Piedmont. There was designated hitter Shayne Carnes, who broke an 0-for-29 skid with three consecutive singles – boosting his average 31 points to .139. Nearby was outfielder Jorge Padilla, who collected three hits and three RBI in a breakout performance. And then there was pitcher Brad Baisley, who stayed out of harm’s way and won for the first time since April 13.

‘‘I was wondering when this was going to happen,’’ said Carnes, who also scored twice and drove in two runs. ‘‘It’s nice to finally contribute to a win. Slump is a kind word – I’ve basically left a small village of people on base. Of course, in the minor leagues it’s all about individual performance. But one of the things they stress here is team play and we definitely came together as a team tonight.’’

They came from behind by playing ‘‘Small Ball’’ against Delmarva starter Jordan Romero in the last of the fifth inning. Carnes ignited the rally with a leadoff single to center, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout. With the infield drawn in, Padilla massaged a run-scoring hit to left that tied the score 2-2.

‘‘We have some power, but I’m not gonna sit back and wait for a three-run homer to win ballgames,’’ said Oberkfell. ‘‘We’ve got to be aggressive on the bases and make things happen. There’s an old saying, ‘You can’t steal first.’ But if they get on, we can start running circles around people.’’

Moments later Padilla scored the go-ahead run when teammate Uriel Casillas christened reliever Randy Perez with a two-out triple into the rightfield corner.

‘‘We’ve been so down lately,’’ said Padilla. ‘‘Last night (in an 11-inning loss to the Shorebirds) we didn’t hit at the times we needed to hit. But tonight we got it, finally.’’

Piedmont padded its lead with four runs in the sixth inning. Carnes made it 4-2 with a bloop single to left-center before Padilla crashed a two-run triple to right. The 19-year old scored the game’s final run on a wild pitch.

The rest was up to Baisley (2-4), who allowed only one earned run in six innings. He was relieved by southpaw Jonathan Rose, who stuck out five in three scoreless innings and notched his first save.

‘‘You know, we’ve got tons of pitching on this team,’’ said Carnes, a left-handed swinger from Alabama. ‘‘And there’s no reason why we can’t put four or five runs on the board every night.’’

That would certainly please Baisley, who reflected, ‘‘A game like this is just good for everybody.’’

NOTES: Delmarva (10-18) committed six errors...Piedmont catcher Jerry Valdez threw out two would-be basestealers in the fifth inning...The Weevils, who stranded 12 baserunners, conclude a four-game homestand against Delmarva tonight. There will be a fireworks display afterward...Piedmont is 5-2 vs. the Shorebirds and has won three of its past four games...Every starter had at least one hit for the Weevils, including Jason Johnson, who singled in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
