Born Nov. 19, 1913, in StanlyCounty, Mrs. Culp was
a daughter of the late W.R. and Estelle Shackelford Kendall. A homemaker, she was a member
of Badin Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Allen Culp; son Ronald
K. Culp, Charlotte; daughter Wanda C. Russell, Albemarle; brother W.R.Kendall Jr., New
London; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Born Jan. 6, 1916, in Iredell County, Mr. Lloyd
was a son of the late John Wesley and Dottie Bowers Loyd. Retired, he was a farmer and
night watchman at J.C. Steele &Sons. He was a member of Hebron Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Gladden
Lloyd, and a son, Gary ONeil Lloyd.

Born July 25, 1934, in Cocke County, Tenn., Mr.
Brown was a son of the late Goldie Mae Hance and Homer Rex Brown. A veteran of the U.S.
Army during the Korean War, he had been a truss builder and truck driver for Southeastern
Materials.

MOCKSVILLE Sidney Thomas Garner, 84, John
Crotts Road, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center.
Born Nov. 21, 1915, Mr. Garner was a son of the
late Rose Meeks and Thomas Alvin Garner. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army
and was retired from the Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church,
where he taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and was elected honorary lifetime
Sunday school superintendent. He was also a church trustee.
He was preceded in death by wife Ruth Boger
Garner.
Survivors include son Thomas Garner of the home;
daughters Rosemary Garner, Mocksville, Pat Garrett, Clemmons, and Carroll Kisner, Hickory;
three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Born July 31, 1905, in Stanly County, Mrs. Herrin
was a daughter of the late James Henry and Eunice Hatley Lowder. She was a homemaker and
had been the oldest member of Canton Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Betty Burris and Irene
Morton, both of Albemarle; sons Ernest Herrin Jr., Albemarle, and James Melvin Herrin,
Charlotte; brothers Cletus and Raymond Lowder, both of Albemarle; 12 grandchildren; and 12
great-grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE Hal Floyd Hatley, 89, 416 Second
Ave., died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born March 17, 1910, in Stanly County, Mr. Hatley
was a son of the late Frank and Etta Eudy Hatley. He was retired from D.A. Holbrook
&Son and had been the oldest member at Salem United Methodist Church.
His wife, Stella Hatley Hatley, died Oct. 26,
1987. He was also preceded in death by daughters Doris Elaine Hatley and Ruby Gathings.
Survivors include daughter Linda Hatley Kendall,
New London; brother Bruce Hatley, Albemarle; four grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

501 Reeves Ave., died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 22, 1933, in Stanly County, Mrs.
Hunsucker was a daughter of Onnie Martin Lisk Clodfelter, Albemarle, and the late Willie
Harris Clodfelter. She had been a switchboard operator at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby
Bruce Hunsucker.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by
brother Carroll Clodfelter, Albemarle.

Barry Edward Hyde
KANNAPOLIS Barry Edward Hyde, 55, 2814
Countryside Drive, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Feb. 20, 1944, in Rowan County, Mr. Hyde was
a son of Margaret Dobbin Hyde, Kannapolis, and the late Thomas C. Hyde. He was a veteran
of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was employed with Joe H. Ervin Grading and
Hauling Co.
He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church. He
had been president of the church council at St. Davids Lutheran Church and worked
with the merger of three churches that became New Hope.
He had been involved with Scouting through the
years and was cowboy sanctioned with the Southern Rodeo Association.
Survivors, in additon to his mother, include wife
Brenda Absher Hyde; sons Todd Edward and Barry Hulon Hyde, both of Kannapolis; brothers
Charles Hyde, Midland, Texas, Rudy Hyde, Kannapolis, and Randy Hyde, Greensboro; sister

Julia Kluttz Leonard
DANVILLE, Va. Julia Rebecca Kluttz Leonard,
78, 152 Dublin Court, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at her home.
Born March 2, 1921, in Rowan County, N.C., Mrs.
Leonard was a daughter of the late George Henry and Ethel Boyd Kluttz.
She graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and
received a masters degree in education from the University of Virginia. She taught
for 35 years in the Danville Public School System.
She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church, a
life-long member of WELCA, a member of the church choir and Sunday school and an
instructor in the original Chrismon project.
She was also a member of Grove Park Garden Club,
Danville Area Choral Arts Society and Alpha Beta Gamma Club.
Survivors include husband Hugh Preston Leonard,
whom she married Dec. 20, 1942; daughters Faye L. Preston, Kent, Conn., and Ruth S.
Leonard, Caswell County, N.C.; brothers George Henry Kluttz Jr., Arthur Kluttz and Elbert
Kluttz, all of Salisbury, N.C.; sisters Pearl Wilson, Charlotte, Ruth Monroe, Ruby Goodman

Baltimore, died Monday (Dec. 27, 1999) at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Born in Rowan County in North Carolina, Ms. Lyles
was a daughter of the late Johnnie Mae Spring and Ernest Edward Lyles. She attended Dunbar
High School and was a former member of Ardis Chapel AMEZion Church, both in Salisbury,
N.C.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters in
Baltimore; brothers Ernest Edward Lyles Jr. and Ronnie Lyles, both of Charlotte, and
Donnie Lyles, Woodleaf, N.C.; sisters Jean R. Miller, Carolyn Luther and Barbara Taylor,
all of Salisbury, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

Jimmy Floyd Martin
KANNAPOLIS Jimmy Floyd Martin, 67, 301
Odell St., died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at his home after a short illness.
Born Sept. 22, 1932, in Queens Village, Long
Island, N.Y., Mr. Martin was a son of the late Lucas Lloyd and Ruth Moody Martin. He owned
and operated the former Kannapolis Well Drilling Co. for 40 years and had been in the well
drilling business for 50 years.
A graduate of Claremont Central High School in
Hickory, he moved to Kannapolis from Cummings, Ga., in 1960.
He was a volunteer and former member of the
Salvation Army board of directors and former member of the Torch Club of the YMCA.
Survivors include wife Patsy Canipe Martin; son
Michael Lloyd Martin, Mooresville; daughter Donna Martin Turnmyre, Hickory; brother L.
Wilson Martin, Statesville; sister Betty Ann Martin, Winston-Salem; and four

sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 20, 1932, in Davidson County, Mr. Potts
was a son of the late Lethia Bundy and James Vestal Potts. He was retired from Baker
Furniture Co. and was a member of Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church.
He was preceded in death by daughter Karen Potts
and son Terry Potts.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Glania
Tayes Potts; sons James, Jeff, Bobby and Michael Potts, all of Mocksville, and Dale Potts,

Born Oct. 7, 1911, in Lincoln County, Mrs.
Whitaker was a daughter of the late Essie Margaret Starnes and Charley Grant Carpenter.
She graduated from Landis High School and was a
homemaker. She also assisted her husband at the State Farm Insurance Agency and was a
member of First Reformed Church and its Womens Guild.
Her husband, Robert Vance Whitaker, died Feb. 28,
1998.
Survivors include son Dean Whitaker, Las Vegas,
Nev.; daughters Mrs. Gene (Cynthia) Miller, Landis, and Peggy Whitaker Holland, Raleigh;
eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
