Ray Edward Beaver

KANNAPOLIS — Ray Edward Beaver, 6800 Wright Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at NorthEast MedicalCenter, Concord.

Born Feb. 17, 1915, in Enochville, Mr. Beaver was a son of the late Charles William and Iva Overcash Beaver. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a lifelong member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church. A farmer, he retired from Cannon Mills.

His wife, Beatrice Pearson Beaver, died March 8, 1995.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: Graveside, 10:30 a.m. Friday, St. Enoch Lutheran Church cemetery. Memorial service in the church at 11. The Rev. John Mark Beaver will officiate.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Elizabeth Finnan

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — Elizabeth Price Finnan, 84, St. Augustine, a native of Salisbury, N.C., died Friday (Dec. 24, 1999).

A resident of St. Augustine since 1979, she was a cum laude graduate of Columbia University in New York. She was an officer in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II and a member of Trinity Episcopal Parish.

Survivors include daughter Sallie Danielson, Orlando.

Funeral services will be private.

Sidney Garner

MOCKSVILLE — Sidney Garner, John Crotts Road, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Morris Herring

KANNAPOLIS — Morris Milton Herring, 86, 1345 Sharon St., died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a brief illness.

Born Feb. 23, 1913, in Madison County, Ga., Mr. Herring was a son of the late Lonnie Alton and Luticia Morris Herring. A charter member of Memorial Baptist Church, he retired from Cannon Mills No. 6 weave room.

Survivors include wife Mary Kathleen Snelling Herring; daughter Mrs. Donald H. (Sharon Herring)Rodgers, Kannapolis; brother Carl Herring, Colbert, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Memorial Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Davis and the Rev. Tim Gold. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Sharon Street.

Eveland Harvey Jones

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Eveland “Emo” Harvey Jones, 72, 207 Overcash Ave., who died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 20, 1927, in Catawba County, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Alvie Burett and Corrie Lee Brown Jones. He retired in 1994 after 20 years from Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, Concord, now NorthEast Medical Center. He had worked at Cannon Memorial YMCA from 1945-1971. A member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, he was church treasurer for 25 years.

Survivors include wife Ethel Bolen Jones; son Douglas HarveyJones, Salisbury; daughter Amy Jones Ikerd, Raleigh; brother Collins C. Jones, Sherrills Ford; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Frances Collins Lucas

CHINA GROVE — Frances Collins Lucas, 73, 75 Central Ave., died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Jan. 2, 1926, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Lucas was a daughter of the late William H. and Elizabeth Luther Collins. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of South China Grove Methodist Church.

Her husband, Grady Clifford Lucas Jr., died Dec. 23, 1985.

Survivors include son Tommy Lucas,Salisbury; daughter Suzanne Pennington, China Grove; brothers Max and Sidney Collins, both of China Grove, and Luther Collins, Salisbury; sister Lucille Pollard, China Grove; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Noon Monday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. David Phelps, pastor, First Baptist Church, China Grove. Graveside, 1 p.m. Monday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Central Avenue.

 

‘Tommy’ Edward Morton

NEW LONDON — Thomas “Tommy” Edward Morton, 71, New London, died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 21, 1928, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Morton was a son of the late Jesse Sylvester and Ruth Elizabeth Dobson Morton. He was a graduate of Concord High School.

Retired in 1991 from Fieldcrest Cannon bleachery department, he worked part-time for M and M Lawn Care. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Albemarle, and a former member of Landis Baptist Church, Landis, where he was a former Sunday school superintendent, deacon and member of the choir.

Survivors include wife Louise “Lou” Love Morton; son Ronnie E. Morton, Enochville; sisters Pansy “Pat”Springer and Audrey Potts, both of Reed; and one grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker, the Rev. Nelson Wright, the Rev. Bobby Utley and the Rev. Richard Horn. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

Josie Lovin Pierce

CHARLOTTE — Josie Lovin Pierce, 72, Charlotte, a former Salisbury resident, died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at Wesley Care Center.

Born Feb. 25, 1927, in Beaufort, Mrs. Pierce was a daughter of the late James W. and Beatrice Skinner Lovin. After her parent’s died during her early childhood she was reared in Salisbury by an aunt and uncle, the late Adelle and Bert Ray. She retired as a patient representative in 1982 from Carolinas Medical Center.

Survivors include daughters Patricia Balentine, Charlotte, and Janet Plyler, Pageland, S.C.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 12:30 p.m. Friday, McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John Harrill. Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, conducted by Dr. W.E. Pierce.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Paul James Potts

MOCKSVILLE — Paul James Potts, Duke Whittaker Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at Davie County Hospital.

Mabel Peeler Reep

The funeral will be Friday for Mabel Peeler Reep, 72, 2214 Mooresville Road, who died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after five years of declining health and several days of serious illness.

Born March 14, 1927, in Rowan County, Mrs. Reep was a daughter of the late Manuel Murphy and Mary Gudger Peeler. Retired from Stanback Powder Co., she was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday school class and chairman of the Care committee.

Survivors include husband George Reep, whom she married July 22, 1945; daughter Diane Reep Rainey, Salisbury; brother Bill Peeler, Salisbury; and sister Norma Jean Peeler Boger, Rockwell.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jim Harris and the Rev. Roger Head. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Mooresville Road.

James Sanford Sizemore

MOCKSVILLE — James Sanford Sizemore, 69, Junction Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Born Dec. 17, 1930, in Yadkin County, Mr. Sizemore was a son of the late Samuel Jones and Eula Collins Sizemore. He was a self-employed carpenter.

His wife, Julia Peacock Sizemore, died in 1972.

Survivors include son Michael Sizemore, Cooleemee; daughter Judy Miller, Mocksville; brothers William and Phillip Sizemore, both of Boonville, and Claude Sizemore, Elkin; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joel Boyles and the Rev. Chris Williams. Burial, Hardison United Methodist Church cemetery.

John William Smith

ALBEMARLE — John William Smith, 70, 30490 Cane Drive, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at his home after a brief illness.

Born May 13, 1929, in Richmond County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late John Braxton and Avilla McIver Smith. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from Fieldcrest Cannon plant 1 roller shop.

Survivors include son the Rev. Mike Smith, Concord; daughter Tammy S. Trull, Albemarle; sisters Elizabeth S. Parks, Kannapolis, and Margaret S. Brown, Concord; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Eula Gwynn Sparks

SPENCER — Eula Gwynn Sparks, 95, Spencer, died Wednesday (Dec. 29, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 27, 1904, in Liberal, Mo., Mrs. Sparks was a daughter of the late James and Rose AnnTanner Gwynn. A homemaker, she was a Baptist.

Her husband, Earl Burton Sparks, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a nephew, Earl D. Scott, Spencer.

The body will be cremated and a memorial service held at a later date.

Evergreen Cremation Services is in charge.

 

Bessie Greene Threatt

KANNAPOLIS — Bessie Louise Greene Threatt, 84, Salisbury, formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) at Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Born May 4, 1915, in Union County, Mrs. Threatt was a daughter of the late Turner and Annie Greene. Educated in the Union County schools, she retired after 45 years from Cannon Mills plant 1. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Kannapolis.

Her husband, Arthur Bruner Threatt, died in 1959.

Survivors include son JoelThreatt, China Grove; brother Albert Greene, Monroe; sister Ethel Greene, Monroe; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Pageland, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Randy Crowell, pastor, West Corinth Baptist Church.

Visitation: None.

George Benjamin Ward

STANLEY — George Benjamin Ward, 72, 118 Stanfield Drive, father of Neal Brock, China Grove, died Tuesday (Dec. 28, 1999) at his home.
