A man police say was beaten, shot twice and stuffed into the trunk of a car at a local
motel lot early Tuesday is alive and recovering in a hospital. Winfred Bertrand McCain, 24, is recovering from gunshot
wounds to his leg and back , said Detective Tom Lowe of the Salisbury Police Department.
Lowe would not disclose the location of the
hospital, and said there isnt much new information in the case other than the fact
that McCain is alive.
Theres really not a whole lot of
information ... besides he was found, he was in a medical facility and, thank God,
hes not dead,Lowe said.
Reports on Richmond, Va. television stations said
last night that McCain is in a hospital in that city, but Lowe would not confirm that.
Lowe would not comment on McCains condition.
Other reports have said the injuries are not life-threatening and McCain should be
released from the hospital soon.
An hour before the shooting, Charlotte police got
a report that four men had abducted McCain at gunpoint in the parking lot of an apartment
complex at 5820 Reddman Road.
The men apparently brought McCain to the Happy
Traveler Inn in at Salisbury, where they beat and shot him, police say.
A Happy Traveler desk clerk told police she heard
a loud noise just before 1 a.m. Tuesday and saw the incident captured by the motels
surveillance camera.
On the monitor, she saw three men pull another man
from the rear seat of a car. They beat him, shot him and threw him into the trunk of the
car, the clerk told police.
That car and another then left the parking lot via
the rear exit and headed toward Interstate 85, the clerk told police.
Police said a motel patron also heard the noise
and saw the incident from his room window.
Investigators with the Salisbury and Charlotte
police departments are working together on the investigation.
Lowe said he doesnt know the relationship,
if any, McCain has with the men who abducted him. He said police could interview McCain on
Monday, depending on his condition.
McCain is the son of Franklin McCain, one of a
group of college students who staged now-famous sit-ins in Greensboro during
the 1960s civil rights movement, Lowe said.
Police say they are having the grainy surveillance
videotape enhanced. The suspects are described as four black men in their 20s driving a
four-door silver or white Toyota Camry and a four-door burgundy Lexus.
