LaKeya Freeman Bussey

CHINA GROVE — LaKeya Freeman Bussey, 20, of 1040 Linn St., died Sunday (Dec. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born May 21, 1979, in Hoboken, N. J., she was a daughter of the late Donese Deaton Freeman. A homemaker, she was educated at Tabernacle Christian School and was a member of Decator Baptist Church in Alabama.

Survivors include husband Adam Bussey; son Cameron Blake Bussey of the home; half brothers Jefferson Lee Roach, Florida, and Marcus Ryan Norton, Trinity; maternal grandmother Becky Owens, Trinity, and maternal great-grandmother Callie Skeen, Trinity.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Northcrest Chapel of Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Doug Ripley. Burial in West Lawn Mausoleum.

Visitation: 6-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Linn Street.

 

Rachel White Call

MOCKSVILLE — Rachel White Call, 82, Pineridge Road, died Tuesday (Dec. 21,1999) at her residence.

Born July 5, 1917, in Davie County, Mrs. Call was a daughter of the late Samantha Boyd and Joseph Clark White. She retired from Wonder Knit and was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Oscar Call, died in 1987.

Survivors include sons Bobby Call, Salisbury, and Randy Call, Mocksville; daughter Linda Kepley, Salisbury; brother John White, Mocksville; sisters Annie Belle Ingram, Mocksville, and Vernelle Bodenheimer, Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Ijames Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Park and the Rev. Franklin Myers. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. today, Eaton Funeral Service.

 

Chalmers Gray Caldwell

MOORESVILLE — Chalmers Gray Caldwell, 89, Mooresville died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at Brian Health Rehabilitation Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born Sept. 27, 1910, he was a son of the late Frank C. and Margaret “Maggie” Gray Caldwell. Educated in the schools of Mooresville, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action with the medical detachment of the 1332 Engineers Regiment. He served in England and the Philippines and was honorably discharged on Jan. 2, 1946.

Mr. Caldwell was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and furnished music for many of the area churches.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Clyburn and Bigham Mortuary, conducted by the Rev. Albert Mills. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Visitation: 10:30-11 at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of niece Betty Gill, 454 McLelland Ave.

 

Robert Leonard Hoffner

The funeral will be Thursday for Robert Leonard Hoffner, 82, who died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at his doctor’s office.

Born Nov. 6, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Hoffner was a son of the late Clementine Reid and David Linn Hoffner. He was educated in Rowan County schools and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He retired after 46 years of service with North Carolina Finishing Co.

He was a member of Union Lutheran Church, member and treasurer of Agner-Efird Men’s Sunday School Class and served on the congregation-council and as a church treasurer. He was a life member of Lutheran Brotherhood at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

A son, the Rev. Bill R. Hoffner, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Mary Elizabeth Kluttz Hoffner, whom he married July 7, 1939; foster son, the Rev. Tom Corbell, Statesville; daughter Brenda Elizabeth Bernhardt, Hockessin, Del.; brothers Odell Hoffner and J.L. Hoffner, both of Salisbury, Claude Hoffner, High Point; sisters Lottie Little, Lorene Barringer, Virginia Kirk, Betty Cauble, Ada Oates, all of Salisbury and Beatrice Snider of Linwood; six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris. burial, family plot, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Union Lutheran Church, fellowship building fund, 4770 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

 

Gracie Mae Johnson

Gracie Mae Johnson, 55, of 916 Scales St. died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center

Margaret Bell Smith

Margaret Bell Smith, 406 Forestdale Drive, Spencer, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 1999) at her residence.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Truby Lee Newsome

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be held Thursday for Truby Lee Newsome, 75, of 5036 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, who died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center. He had been in declining health for three years and seriously ill two weeks.

Born Aug. 14, 1924, in Raleigh, he was a son of the late Roland D. and Anner Mae Powell Newsome. He retired in 1990 from Florida Steel Drum, Harrisburg. A member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church for 50 years, he was a Sunday school teacher, active in the United Methodist Men and was a former youth leader. He served as a sergeant with the U. S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Marie Christy Newsome; sons Ronnie Newsome, Kannapolis, and Chris Newsome, Lake Norman; sister Doris Wilson, Raleigh; brother John Newsome, Raleigh; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Duncan and the Rev. Marion Fulk. Burial in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by DAV chapter 27 of Concord.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Old Concord-Salisbury Road.

Memorials: Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church, 6001 Old Concord-Salisbury Road, Kannapolis, N. C. 28023.

 

Ruth Honeycutt

LANDIS — Lillian “Ruth” Crim Honeycutt, 84, 810 S. Zion St., died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999), at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born Jan. 3, 1915, in Pittsborough, Pa., Mrs. Honeycutt was a daughter of the late Walter Crim and Gold Helen Koon Crim. A retired employee of the Employment Security Commission in Kannapolis, she was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis. She was a high school and business college graduate.

Her husband, Luther James Honeycutt, died May 20, 1971.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hoke Ritchie and the Rev. Doug Kearney. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home

Sarah Stout Smith

The funeral will be Friday for Sarah Ernestine Stout Smith, 89, 125 Hawkins Loop, who died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after an illness of several days.

Born Nov. 28, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Badger Pemberton Stout and James Clay Stout. She attended J.C. Price High School and retired as a property manager in Chicago, Ill. She was a member of New Hope AME Zion Church, East Spencer, where she was a member of the Parent Body Missionary, Deaconess Board and Life’s Members Council.

Survivors include foster sons Alvin “Monty” Tucker of the home and Lonnie Tucker, Shelby; brother, Albert Stout, Salisbury.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, New Hope AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Retoy Gaston, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of brother Albert Stout, 113 Hawkins Loop.

Memorials: New Hope AME Zion Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 274, East Spencer, N.C. 28159.

Andrew Vohar

COOLEEMEE — The funeral will be Thursday for Andrew “Andy” Vohar, 72, Center Street, who died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville.

Born June 17, 1927, in Leetsdale, Pa., Mr. Vohar was a son of the late Mary Menosky and George Vohar. He retired from Crucible Steel Co. after 56 years of service. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.

His wife, Mildred Castner Vohar, died in 1998.

Survivors include sisters Marie Vohar, Industry, Pa., Elizabeth Verzella, Bellmawr, and Thelma Polizoto, Coraopolis, Pa.; and a brother, the Rev. Anthony Vohar, Pickerington, Ohio.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, St. Francis Catholic church, conducted by the Rev. Andrew Draper and the Rev. Ned Bailey. Burial will be in Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Eaton Funeral Service of Mocksville is in charge.
