CHINA GROVE Lakeya Freeman Bussey, 20, of
1040 Linn St., died Sunday (Dec. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center from injuries
sustained in an automobile accident.

The Rev. Troy Clement
LEXINGTON The Rev. Fred Troy Clement, 74,
3655 W. Old Highway 64, died Sunday (Dec. 19, 1999) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home,
Winston-Salem.
Born Jan. 23, 1925, in davidson County, he was a
son of the late John Henry and Mary Hill Thomason Clement. He served in the U.S. Army in
the military police and became a disabled veteran during World War II. A Baptist minister,
he served at Clearview, Yadkin and Victory Baptist churches, returning to Clearview, from
which he retired.
His wife, Annie Dolores Sue Clement,
preceded him in death.
Survivors include son Fred Clement, Lexington;
sisters Mazie Mauldin and Willie Koontz, both of Lexington; two grandchildren; and one
great-grandson.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Timberlake Chapel,

Norma Jean Fowler
MOCKSVILLE Norma Jean Frye Fowler, 29, died
Sunday (Dec. 19, 1999) at Davie County Hospital.
Born July 3, 1970, in Davie County, she was a
daughter of Eugene Frye of Cooleemee and Colleen Stanley Strain of Mocksville. A graduate
of Davie High School, she was employed by Lexington Furniture Co. She was a lifelong
member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include
daughter April Nicole Fowler and son Jeremy Benjamin Williams, both of the home;
stepfather Jimmy Strain, Mocksville; stepmother Malinda Frye, Cooleemee; brothers Danny E.
Frye, Cooleemee, and James Aaron Strain, Mocksville; maternal grandmother Magdline Morgan,
Mocksville; paternal grandfather Lester E. Frye, Mocksville.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Calvary Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Gryder. Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be
taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Charles Freeman Gerock
The funeral will be Wednesday for Charles Freeman
Gerock Jr., 61, who died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at his home after a period of declining
health.
Born Aug. 15, 1938, in Rowan County, he was a son
of the late Charles Freeman and Mildred Cauble Gerock. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was
owner of Gerocks Grocery. He was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church and was a
youth leader and a deacon.
Survivors include wife Joy Snider Gerock, whom he
married Oct. 28, 1961; son Todd Freeman Gerock, High Point; daughter Mrs. Ted (Angie)
Banther, Salisbury; sister Penny Gerock Sides, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Trading Ford Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, and the Rev. David Blanton, former

Carl Harry C. J. Hawkins Jr., 77, 115
Hawkins Loop, died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several
years of declining health.
Born March 27, 1922, in Rowan County, he was a son
of the late Carl Harry and Mary Chunn Hawkins. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he
attended Livingstone College and was a retired employee of Southern Railroad and Hoechst
Celanese.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a
member of the J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 and St. Luke Baptist Church, where he
was a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include wife Mary Janette Neely Hawkins;
son Carl Harry Hawkins III, Upper Marlboro, Md.; stepsons Larry, Steve and David Jones,
all of Salisbury, William Jones, Cleveland, Ohio, Robert Jones, Lexington, and Eric Jones,
Perthamboy, N.J.; daughters Shirley Ann Witt, Upper Marlboro, Md., Mary Virginia
Hawkins,Washington, D.C., Audre Charette, Bronx, N.Y., and Kathy Worth, Salisbury;
brothers Leonard and John Hawkins, both of Dayton, Ohio; sisters Mary Patton, Richfield,
Priscilla Hawkins, Berthenia Hawkins, and Nell Holmes, all of Salisbury; nine
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE Margie Ellen Plowman Huneycutt,
75, 1020 Austin St., died Monday (Dec. 20, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born July 14, 1924, in Stanly County, she was a
daughter of the late Emma Bass and William Garfield Plowman.
She weighed yarn at Wiscassett Mills.
Her husband, Hiram Jacob Huneycutt, preceded in
death.

for Elsie Sims Karriker, 88, Best of Care Rest Home, formerly of Corriher Grange Road. She
died Sunday (Dec. 19, 1999) at the rest home.
Born Oct. 2, 1911, in Lakewood Heights, Atlanta,
Ga., she was a daughter of the late Alice Strider and Smiley Sims. Educated in the
Mecklenburg County schools, she was a homemaker and member of Concordia Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Clay Edward Karriker, died Dec. 7,
1989.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. Clement (Lenora)
Bost, Mooresville; stepdaughter Mrs. bobby (Thelma) Cavin, Badin; brother Ed Sims,

James Earl Owen
James Earl Owen, 61, Salisbury, died Sunday (Dec.
19,1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for two and a
half years.
Born Nov. 12, 1938, in Salisbury, Mr. Owen was a
son of Elizabeth lib Lee Owen Casper, Salisbury, and the late George A. Owen,
and the stepson of V.S. Casper, Salisbury.
An employee of Harris Teeter for 41 years, he held
various positions, including regional director. He was a member of Second Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Downs Owen, whom
he married Dec. 24, 1967; sons James Earl owen Jr., Robert Julian Dry and Charles Allen
Dry, all of Rockwell, and Grady Max Dry II of Salisbury; daughter Nancy Carol Dry
Zimmerman, Salisbury; sister Patty Sue Owen Koontz, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.

GREENSBORO Ruth Fleming Phifer, 71, 1606
Lansdown Ave., died Saturday (Dec. 18, 1999) at Moses Cone Hospital.
Mrs. Phifer attended schools in Rowan and Davie
counties. A licensed practical nurse, she worked at L. Richardson Memorial Hospital and
Moses Cone during her career. She was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church, and had
served on the deacon board, comfort committee and peacemaking committee, as well as being
a member of the Presbyterian Women, Roxie McNair Circle and the Inspirational Ensemble.
Mrs. Phifer was a member and past Worthy Matron of
Magnolia Chapter 23, Order of Eastern Star, a member and past Loyal Lady Ruler of
Greensboro Assembly 106 Order of the Golden Circle and a member and past Illustrious
Commandress of Kalif Court 90 Daughters of Isis.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Delbert
Phifer; sons Preston L. Fleming and Larry D. Phifer, both of Greensboro; daughters Omega
L. Phifer, Kernersville, and Joyce A. Phifer, Raleigh; brother James L. Fleming Jr.,
Fayetteville; sisters Eulalia Fleming, Alma Cowan and Connie Neely, all of Salisbury; and
five grandchildren.
