Falcons fall to inside attack

BY ED DUPREE
SALISBURY POST

CONCORD — Concord’s girls fattened up on Spratt and pulled off an upset of West Rowan in 3A South Piedmont Conference basketball here Friday night.

The Spiders, in seventh place entering the game, used 5-foot-10 center Candis Spratt’s 20 points and 16 rebounds to take a 48-44 victory, knocking West into a tie for third place in the SPC standings.

“She dominated offensively and defensively,” said coach Angie Waddell of West. “At halftime, we had her with 11 points and nine rebounds. That’s just one point from a double-double at halftime.”

While Spratt carried the Spiders (2-3 in the SPC, 5-3 overall) most of the night, it was guard Chel Sumlin whose 3-pointer with 28 seconds to go broke a 44-all tie. Sumlin, who finished with 14 points, added a free throw in the final seconds for the four-point margin.

West, now 3-2 in the SPC and tied with East Rowan for third place, fell to 6-3 overall. Point guard Kari Schenk and forward Kate Goodman led the Falcons with 11 points apiece.

“We just weren’t mentally prepared, and that’s my fault. I take full credit for not getting them ready,” said Waddell.

Concord, led by Spratt’s eight points and five rebounds in the third quarter, held a 30-21 lead at one point, then West’s transition game picked up steam. Goodman, Sara Pieper, Kristen McNeely and Goodman again hit field goals as the Falcons went on an 8-0 run to pull within 30-29. Five points by Sumlin late in the quarter gave Concord a 35-31 lead with one period to go.

Then Shameeka Wansley started the fourth quarter with two free throws and McNeely and Schenk added baskets for West’s first lead (37-35) since the second quarter. When Schenk scored on assist from Pieper for a 42-38 lead with three minutes to play, it appeared West was in control.

However, that was West’s last field goal. The Spiders outscored the Falcons 10-2 the rest of the way.

“I thought we could maybe run on them, and we did,” said Waddell of the second-half comeback. “We couldn’t obviously hold on to it (the lead), and they were getting too many second shots. We weren’t rebounding. They were getting too many putbacks. Their points were coming in the paint most of the time. And anytime Sumlin gets the ball, you’ve got to be out there in front of her.”

As for Spratt’s solid game, the West coach said, “Our whole objective was to make her work, and I don’t think we did a very good job of what we set out to do. ... She was very strong with the ball, and she wouldn’t let anybody take it from her.”

n

NOTES: Schenk had seven steals and six assists to go with her 11 points — her eighth double-figure game of the season. Pieper had four assists. ... West closes out its pre-Christmas schedule at home against West Rowan on Monday night.
