William H. Avery

William H. Avery, 87, 615 W. Fisher St., died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at Brightmoor Nursing Center after several years of declining health.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edith Morgan Morris Beck

ALBEMARLE — Edith Lucille Morgan Morris Beck, 83, 2109 Marwood Lane, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 2, 1916, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Beck was a daughter of the late John Spencer and Queen Elizabeth Parnell Morgan. She had been an assistant chief operator with Concord Telephone Co.

Her husband, Earl T. Beck, died Sept. 17, 1986.

Survivors include son Gerald Brooksher Morris, Marshville; daughter Peggy Morris Dennis, Albemarle; brother David F. Morgan, Albemarle; sisters Olive Morgan Surratt and Dorothy Morgan Barbee, both of Albemarle, Virginia Morgan Keim, Saint Charles, Mo., and Carolyn Morgan Simmons, Mount Holly; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Hart and the Rev. Tommy Butler. Burial, Mount Carmel Baptist Church cemetery, Troy.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Peggy Morris Dennis, 2109 Marwood Lane.

 

Zelia Stikeleather Dabbs

Fayetteville — Zelia Stikeleather Dabbs, 84, Laurel Street, formerly of Mooresville and Concord, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at Columbia-Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital.

Born April 2, 1915, in Rockwell, Mrs. Dabbs was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Dabbs.

Survivors include son Robert “Bob” Dabbs; daughter Rebecca Pless, Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, Mooresville. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Dorothy Bostian Eller

KANNAPOLIS — Dorothy Ella Bostian Eller, 89, Avante of Concord, formerly of Patterson Avenue, died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after 18 months of declining health.

Born April 18, 1910, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Eller was a daughter of the late John L. and Lula Ada Castor Bostian. Retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, she was a member of Center Grove Lutheran Church.

Survivors include sister Ruby Litaker, Salisbury; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Services: 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Zachariah Harris. Burial, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of grandson Barry Menius, 802 S. Main St., Landis.

William Banks Foard

William Banks Foard, 72, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at Salisbury’s Hefner VAMedical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1927, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Foard was a son of the late George Wilson and Inez Gladden Foard. He was a graduate of Oakhurst High School, Charlotte. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was wounded while serving in Korea.

Survivors include brothers Alfred and Marion Foard, both of Charlotte, and Rency Foard, Independence, Va.; and sisters Murl F. Morris and Eloise Norman, both of Charlotte, and Mary Moses, Greenville, S.C.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by a VA chaplain.

Visitation: None.

Beulah Cloer Morgan

SPENCER — Beulah Cloer Morgan, 94, Edgefield, S.C., a former Spencer resident, died Monday (Dec. 13, 1999) in Lakewood County, S.C.

Born in Caldwell County, Mrs. Morgan retired from Stanback Company, Salisbury. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include son Julian H. Morgan Jr., Spartanburg, S.C.; daughter Mary Helen Pitman, Kingwood, Texas; sister Mae Belle Daye, Drexel;half brothers William Cloer, Bluffton, S.C., and Michael G. Cloer Jr., Lenoir; half sisters Betty Parnell, Dallas, Ruth anderson, Alexis, and Rachel Little, Buies Creek; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Saturday, Little Stevens Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Edgefield, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Rodney Hagans.

Visitation: After the service at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, Edgefield, S.C.

Mary Overcash

STATESVILLE — Mary Shoemaker Overcash, 65, Loftin Lane, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at Oak Forest Road after a period of declining health.

She had retired from Hoechst Celanese, Salisbury, where she was a production operator in the warehouse.

Services: Graveside, 3 today, Iredell Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 1:45-2:45 today, Nicholson Funeral Home.

Troy D. Shimpock

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Troy Daniel Shimpock, 72, 523 Villa St., who died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 11, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, Mr. Shimpock was the son of the late Oscar Charles and Lalar Mardecia Hopkins Shimpock. Owner/operator of Troy’s Beauty Shop, he was past president of the North Carolina Cosmetologist Hair Dressers Association, Kannapolis Hair Design Association and past chairman of the North Carolina Hair Fashion committee.

He was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church and the choir and was a former precinct chairman for Cabarrus County Board of Elections at Box 2 in Township 4 at Second Presbyterian Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and retired as a major from the Civil Air Patrol. From 1970-1980, he was a chaperone with the A.L. Brown High School Band and an honorable Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include wife Margalene Hager Shimpock; daughter Yolonda Shimpock-Miller, Summerfield; and brothers the Rev. Farrell Shimpock, Albemarle, and Archie Ray Shimpock, Thomasville.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie.

Visitation: At the church after the service. At other times the family will be at the home on Villa Street.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Richard ‘Dick’ Williams

Richard “Dick” Williams, 71, Charlotte, formerly of Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital during heart surgery. He was a coordinator for Catawba College Chiefs and a former Indian Baseball coach.

A native of Morganton, Williams served as athletic director and coach for a variety of sports at East Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte, from 1957-1990. After retiring from high school, where he had served as head coach of every sport from football to girls softball, Williams was named head baseball coach at Catawba College, where he won two conference championships and received several coach of the year awards. Over the past four years, he headed the Chiefs Club, an athletic booster club for the liberal arts college.

Survivors include his wife, Paula; sons Richard “Chip” Williams, Mooresville, and Mark Williams, Charlotte; and four grandsons.
