Mary Belle Glosson AllenMary Belle
Glosson Allen, 90, 2306 N. Lumina Ave., Wrightsville Beach, a former Kannapolis resident,
died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at Cape Fear Community Hospital, Wilmington, after a short
illness.
Born May 1, 1909, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs.
Allen was a daughter of the late McKinney and Carrie Kerr Glosson. Retired from Belk
department store, Charlotte, she had worked in the china department for over 20 years. She
was a member of Dulins Grove Advent Christian Church, Charlotte, for over 80 years.
Survivors include daughter Mrs. William (Deanna
Allen)Saylor, Wrightsville Beach; sister Jane McCombs, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild.

Sarah Ruth Poole Bostian
KANNAPOLIS Sarah Ruth Poole Bostian, 95,
2109 Moose Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at her home after a period of declining
health.
Born Oct. 31, 1904, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs.
Bostian was a daughter of the late JohnTaylor and Katherine Robbins Poole. She retired in
1963 from Cannon Mills Co. plant 1 spinning room after many years. She was a member of
Lutheran Chapel Church, China Grove.
Her husband, James Clarence Bostian, died May 26,
1990.
Survivors include sons Merle Frank and James
Bernard Bostian, both of Kannapolis; sisters Loretta James, Kannapolis, and Avis Menius,
Holden Beach; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Essie Troutman Hogan
LANDIS The funeral will be Monday for Essie
Troutman Hogan, 74, 601 S. Vance St., who died Wednesday (Dec. 15, 1999) at Avante of
Concord after four years of declining health and six weeks of serious illness.
Born Aug. 14, 1925, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Hogan
was a daughter of the late Harvey Eugene and Myrtie Holshouser Troutman. Educated in the
Rowan County schools, she had worked at China Grove Cotton Mill.
Survivors include husband James Adam Hogan; sons
James Michael Hogan, Matthews, Kenneth Eugene Hogan,Garden City, S.C., Dennis Lee Hogan,
Salisbury, and Ralph Edward Hogan, Charleston, S.C.; daughters Sue H. Wilkerson,
Salisbury, and Kay Hogan, Landis; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Northcrest Chapel,
Linn-Honeycutt FuneralHome, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Rabon. Burial, West
Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral
home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Dennis Lee Hogan, 195 Spring
Oak Drive.
C.L. Lilly
The body has been cremated and no services are
planned for C.L. Lilly, 83, 618 Hawkinstown Road, who died Friday (Dec. 3, 1999) at Rowan
Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 9, 1916, in Alabama, Mr. Lilly was
formerly employed by Isenhour Brick and Tile Co.
Survivors included stepson Charles Oliver,
Brooklyn, N.Y.; and sister Adele Mitchell, Miami, Fla.

KANNAPOLIS Troy D. Shimpock, 523 Villa St.,
died Thursday (Dec. 16, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

John T. Varnadore
John T. Varnadore, 78, Salisbury, died Wednesday
(Dec. 15, 1999) at his home.
Born Dec. 6, 1921, in Sampson, Ala., Mr. Varnadore
was a son of the late Stephen Matthew and Katie Belle Ritchburg Varnadore. He was educated
in the George County, Miss., schools. A career merchant seaman, he served in the U.S. Navy
during World War IIand the Korean War. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs
Witnesses.
His wife, Virginia King Varnadore, died in
December 1982.
Survivors include son Stephen Collins
Varnadore,Salisbury; daughters Jonnie Snow, Salisbury, and Judy Holmes, Cleveland, Texas;
nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Kingdom Hall

Robert Bob Wakefield
The funeral will be Saturday for Robert Henry
BobWakefield, 88, Tucson, Ariz., formerly of 506 Elm St., who died Monday
(Dec. 13, 1999) in Tucson.
Born Nov. 7, 1911, in Guilford County, Mr.
Wakefield was a son of the late Thomas and Sally Lindsay Wakefield. He came to Salisbury
in 1945 and was manager of the Elks Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church
of Salisbury.
Survivors include wife Marguerite Mason Wakefield,
Tucson, Ariz.; son Robert H. Bob Wakefield Jr., Tucson, Ariz.; sisters Mrs.
Tom (Billie)McCollum, Greensboro, and Mrs. George (Burt)Pritchett, Burlington; and two
grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Rowan
Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev.Thomas Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church.
