Kimberly Michelle Black

Kimberly Michelle Black, 29, 1614 Standish St., died Monday (Dec. 13, 1999)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edward Clifton Cook

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Edward Clifton Cook, 61, McClamrock Road, who died Sunday (Dec. 12, 1999) at his home.

Born March 21, 1938, in Caldwell County, Mr. Cook was a son of the late Edward C. and Pearl Bowman Cook. Retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 17 years, he had also been a refrigerator repairman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He had been a Peewee baseball coach and supporter of Girl Scouts.

His wife, Glenda Myrick Cook, died in 1981. He was also preceded in death by a son.

Survivors include son Dennis Cook, Mocksville; daughter Deborah C. Seats, Farmington; brother Bob Cook, Hickory; sisters Frances Pilcher, Farmington, and Carolyn Woods, Cooleemee; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Norman Frye. Burial, Farmington Community cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Mattie Davis Gwaltney

KANNAPOLIS — Mattie Davis Gwaltney, 75, 202 W. 13th St., died Monday (Dec. 13, 1999) at 1213 N. Juniper St.

Born Sept. 2, 1923, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Gwaltney was a daughter of the late John Dennis and Addie Thomas Davis. Retired, she had worked at Cannon Mills plant 1 wash cloth department for 40 years. A member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, she was active with the Seniors Group.

Survivors include son Dennis Dean Gwaltney, Charlotte; sisters Blondine McWhorter, Kannapololis, and Bonnie Fisher, Rockwell; brother Horace Davis, Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Autrey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Virginia Grubb Hovis

The funeral will be Wednesday for Virginia Grubb Hovis, 75, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Dec. 12, 1999) at Spencer Health Care Center after two years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born July 31, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hovis was a daughter of the late Thomas Hicks and Golden Tucker Grubb. A graduate of Boyden High School, she retired from Bell South in 1979 after 28 years. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church and a volunteer with Hospice.

Her husband, Luther Martin Hovis Jr., died July 27, 1995.

Survivors include brothers Thomas E. Grubb, Newport News, Va., and Grady C. Grubb, Sumter, S.C.; and sister Pearl Sally Myers, Salisbury.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, City Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev.Dale Robertson, pastor, North Main Baptist Church.

Visitation:None.

Gladys Efird McCommons

ALBEMARLE — Gladys Efird McCommons, 78, 28427 Valley Drive, died Sunday (Dec. 12, 1999) at her home.

Born Feb. 28, 1921, in Stanly County, Mrs. McCommons was a daughter of the late Fred Carl and Iber Dye Efird. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Shelby L. Burleson, Vann B. Smith and L. Cecil McCommons.

Survivors include son S. Leon Burleson, Charlotte; sister Edna S. Connell, Manassas, Va.; two grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Futterer and the Rev. Heidi Sommers. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Valley Drive.

Eloise Brown Miller

The funeral will be today for Eloise Brown Miller, 85, who died Sunday (Dec. 12, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health for a number of years and seriously ill for one week.

Born Jan. 21, 1914, in Danville, Ga., she was a daughter of the late John Clyde and Frances Williams Brown. A homemaker, she was educated in the Granite Quarry and Richfield schools.

She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Elizabeth R. McCombs Circle. She was honored this year with a life membership in the Seminary Auxiliary.

Her husband, Harry Wilson Miller, died Jan. 9, 1986, and a son, James Robert Miller, died Nov. 5, 1986.

Survivors include daughters Mrs. Thomas (Jane) Monroe, Salem, Va., Mrs. Jesse (Annette) Morgan and Mrs. Sam (Peggy) Rothrock, both of Salisbury; brothers Homer Brown, Augusta, Ga., Richard Brown, Brunswick, Ga. and George Vaughn Brown, DeLand, Fla.; sisters Mrs. Homer (Harriette) Goff, DeLand, Fla., Mrs. Emmie Brown, Monticello, Ga., Mrs. Jane Bibson, Enterprise, Ala., Mrs. Frank (Cleo), Bishop, Big Bear City, Calif., Mrs. Royce (Linda) Mock and Mrs. Chuck (Gladys) Oyler, both of Brunswick, Ga. and Mrs. Luther (Fran) Warren, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Bethel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark S. Reed, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Freitas, pastor, Maranatha Bible Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Naomi Sells Misenheimer

RICHFIELD — Naomi Sells Misenheimer, 93, 40637 Paul’s Crossing Road, died Monday (Dec. 13, 1999) at her home.

Born Dec. 10, 1906, in Stanly County, Mrs. Misenheimer was a daughter of the late Peter G. and Frankie Hall Sells. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Arthur M. Misenheimer, died in 1992. A son, Lowell Misenheimer, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Jerry C. Misenheimer, Richfield; daughters Annie Lee Misenheimer and Jahalia M. Frick, both of Richfield, and Geraldine M. Poplin, New London; sister Josie S. Norton, Gold Hill; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Paul’s Crossing Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jessie R. Dennis and the Rev. Wallace Morton. Burial, New Bethel Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home onPaul’s Crossing Road.

Minnie M. Oakley

LEXINGTON — Minnie M. Oakley, 75, East Holly Grove Road, died Sunday (Dec. 12, 1999) at her home.

BornDec. 1, 1924, in Davidson County, Mrs. Oakley was a daughter of the late William Arthur and Eugenia Hedrick Michael. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by sons Richard Farlon Oakley and Terry Oakley and George Dan Hinson, and two grandchildren.

Survivors include husband Richard M. Oakley, whom she married Oct. 12, 1954; daughters Mitzi McBride and Wendy Jones, both of Lexington; sons Billy Hinson, PaulHill Jr. and Toby and Bobby Oakley, all of Lexington; sisters Dorothy Robertson, Advance, and Shirley Walser, Lexington; brother Gerald Michael, Lexington; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 today, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Myers Tilley. Burial,Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

At other times the family will be at the home on East Holly Grove Road.

Bettye Barnhardt Price

The funeral is today for Bettye Ruth Barnhardt Price, 51, Atlanta, formerly of Rowan County, who died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) in Kannapolis.

Born Dec. 9, 1948, in Rowan County, Mrs. Price was a daughter of Essie Barnhardt, China Grove, and the late Vestal Barnhardt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was a cashier with Thrift Stores. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Atlanta.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Windred Price Jr.; and sister Louise Hinson, China Grove.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Evergreen Cremation Services Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Cameron McGill, associate pastor, First Baptist Church, Rockwell. The body was cremated.

 

Ramona Darlene Wheeler

KANNAPOLIS — Ramona Darlene Wheeler, 64, 1304 Hawthorne St., died Monday (Dec. 13, 1999) at her home after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1935, in Raleigh County, W.Va., Mrs. Wheeler was a daughter of the late Royal D. and Sarah Gladys Lilly Vaught. A member of Church of God, Kannapolis, she formerly worked at Raleigh General Hospital and Pine Lodge Nursing Center, Beckley, W.Va.

Her husband, Thamer Thurmen Wheeler, and a son, Gregory S. Wheeler, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Roger Wheeler, Beaver, W.Va., Lee Wheeler, Mabscott, W.Va., and Steven, Michael, Thamer, Curtis and Leroy Wheeler, all of Kannapolis; daughters Imagene Wallace, Fireco, W.Va., Rita Richmond, Mabscott, W.Va., and Lisa and Yvonne Wheeler, both of Kannapolis; four sisters; three brothers; 27 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m.Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Vaught. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Hawthorne Street.

 

Gillie Odell Torrence

The funeral will be Wednesday for Gillie Odell Torrence, 79, 708 Hawkinstown Road, who died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for several years.

Born July 11, 1920, in Mooresville, Mr. Torrence was the son of the late Sam and Daisy Johnson Torrence. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools, he retired from the Rowan-Salisbury school system.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of St. Luke Baptist Church and J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

His wife, Eva Mae Torrence, died March 7, 1995, and a son, J.C. Torrence, died April 7, 1988.

Survivors include son Gillie Odell Torrence Jr., Salisbury; sisters Odessa Boyd, Roosevelt, Long Island, N.Y., and Mary McAdoo, Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Heggins, pastor. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke Baptist Church. Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.
