Sadie Peeler Beck

SPENCER — Sadie Peeler Beck, 90, Spencer, died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a sudden illness.

Born Feb. 5, 1909, in Rowan County, Mrs. Beck was a daughter of the late Margaret Holshouser and Paul A. David Peeler. A graduate of Boyden High School, she had been employed with North Rowan High School. Also a homemaker, Mrs. Beck was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, and its Eva Peeler Sunday School Class.

Her husband, James Cambron Beck, died Aug. 7, 1962.

Survivors include son James Kenneth Beck, Tampa, Fla.; brother Shuford Peeler, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, chapel of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Mary Peters, associate pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Haril ‘Dean’Jones

GOLD HILL —Haril “Dean” Jones, 59, Gold Hill, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born April 2, 1940, in Ashe County, Mr. Jones was a son of the late Nattie Sheets and Earl Jones. Educated in the Ashe County schools, he was a self-employed logger. He was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Jamie Jones, Albemarle, and Paul Jones, Gold Hill; daughters Charlotte Dill and Melissa Jones, both of Abeyville, La.; brother Gwyn Jones, Woodleaf; sister Ruth Jones Eastridge, Warrensville; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, West Jefferson, conducted by the Rev. Jim Grey and the Rev. Ambros Jones. Burial, Welch Cemetery, Ashe County.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, and noon-2 p.m. Sunday, Ashelawn Memorial Chapel, Jefferson.

 

Katie Hairston Jones

Katie Elizabeth Hairston Jones, 66, of Winston-Salem, mother of James Jones Jr. of Cleveland, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at his home after an extended illness.

Services: Noon Monday, Dreamland Park Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Fisher. Burial, Piedmont Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Sunday, Russell Funeral Home, Winston-Salem.

 

David McEachern

David McEachern, 76, 1121 Laurel St., died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 23, 1923, in Latta, S.C., Mr. McEachern was a son of the late Carrie Lee Berry and Frank McEachern. A graduate of the public schools of Dillon County, S.C., Mr. McEachern attended Livingstone College and barber school

Retired from Cone Mills, he was a licensed barber. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, a former Sunday school teacher and a former choir member. Also a member of the Rowan Democratic Party and Sedgefield Men’s Club, he was a former member of Western Star Lode 98 and the NAACP.

Survivors include wife Alberta Hargrove McEachern; daughters Carolyn E. McEachern and Linda McEachern Brown, both of Greensboro; brother Eli McEachern; sisters Bertha Jones, Kinston and Helen Pair, Washington, D.C.; and one grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Stowe, pastor, officiating. Burial, City Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Monday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, Salisbury.

Mary Mills McLelland

MOORESVILLE — Mary Mills McLelland, 75, Messick Avenue, died Friday (Dec. 10, 1998) at Genesis ElderCare, Mooresville.

Born Dec. 19, 1923, in Iredell County, Mrs. McLelland was a daughter of the late Rev. Enoch Webster and Annie Belle Campbell Mills. A graduate of Unionville High School, she had retired as an inspector with Burlington Industries, Mooresville, after 12 years with the company.

She was a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, Mooresville, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Survivors include son Tommy McLelland, Mooresville; brothers Samuel W. Mills, Concord, Charles A. Mills, Cripple Creek, Colo., and James A. Mills, East Bend; sisters Frances Drake, Mooresville, and Elizabeth Hartsell, Concord; and two grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Sunday, Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leo Fair. Burial, Willow Valley Cemetery.

Visitation: 5-7 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Betty Jo Perry Talley

LEXINGTON — Betty Jo Perry Talley, 56, 13 Green Meadow Drive, died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 13, 1943, in Augusta County, Va., Mrs. Talley was a daughter of Dessie Mae Calhoun Perry and the late George Lee. She had taught in the Davidson County school system till retiring in 1998 from Central Davidson Middle School. She was a member of New Testament Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Ronald Talley, whom she married Feb. 2, 1963; son Ron Tally Jr., Winston-Salem; daughter Carolyn Ball, Raleigh; sister Sherrie Anderson, Richmond, Va.; brother Danny Perry, Staunton, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, New Testament Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Willis and the Rev. Robert Decker. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Dorothy ‘Dot’ Thornton

Dorothy Mims “Dot” Thornton, 76, 635 Statesville Blvd., died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Gilley Odell Torrence Sr.

Gilley Odell Torrence Sr., 79, 708 Hawkinstown Road, died Friday (Dec. 10, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edna Walker Vickers

WINSTON-SALEM — Edna Holmes Walker Vickers, 77, 5100 Lansing Drive, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 8, 1922, in Lexington, Mrs. Vickers was a daughter of the late Waddy and Martha Hairston Holmes. A member of Rainbow Tabernacle, she was a Mother of the Church and a member of the Missionary Circle. She was also a member of the Flower Club.

Survivors include sons Vanzie Lee Walker, Miami, Fla., James Walker Jr., Salisbury, and Coleman Walker, Lexington; daughter Inez Verdell, Winston-Salem; brother Thomas Holmes, Lexington; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 7 p.m. Sunday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, conducted by Bishop Joe McIntosh. Burial,11 a.m. Monday, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

 

Baxter L. Wyatt

RUTLEDGE, Ga. — Baxter L. Wyatt, 83, formerly of Rowan County, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at his residence.

Born Dec. 3, 1916, in Rowan County, Mr. Wyatt was a son of the late Amanda Mayette Miller and Pleasant Love Wyatt. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a retired machinist. He was a Baptist.

His wife, Mary Katherine Peninger Wyatt, preceded him death.

Survivors include daughters Hilda W. Chilton, Rutledge, Ga., and Sheila D. Bradley, Covington, Ga.; brother R.L. Wyatt, Winston-Salem; sisters Ruby Walton and Louise Adams, both of Spencer, and Evelyne Smith, Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Sunday, Oakdale Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Mark Walton.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury.

Memorials: Oakdale Baptist Church, 200 Charles St., Spencer, N.C. 28159.
