Leller Lue Andrews

MOUNT GILEAD — Leller Lue Andrews, 75, Mount Gilead, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999)at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Feb. 27, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Andrews was a daughter of the late Mack and Eva McIntyre Biggers. She was a seamstress at Troy Drapery.

Her husband, John Gaston Andrews, and a son, Claude Andrews, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son William A. Andrews,Troy; daughters Marie Lambert, Margaret A. Lefler and Lula A. Kimrey, all of Albemarle, Lizzie Delarosa, Ellerbe, and Flonnie A. Gabrielson, Jacksonville, Fla.; brother Clyde D. Biggers, Albemarle; sister Lether Reap, Albemarle; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Mabry. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Lula Kimrey, 714 Parker St., Albemarle.

 

Harry E. Baucom

KANNAPOLIS — Harry E. Baucom, 70, Kannapolis, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999)at his home after a year of declining health.

Born Oct. 8, 1929, in Union County, Mr. Baucom was a son of the late Eustace and Etta McManus Baucom. He was educated in the Kannapolis schools.

He had worked as a loom fixer and at the tin shop at Cannon Mills. He had also worked at Gamewell Mechanical, Salisbury, and as a route man for Rowan Dairy. He attended Central Baptist Church.

A son, Jimmy Wayne Baucom, died Jan. 23, 1998.

Survivors include wife Faye Barbee Baucom; son Barry Lynn Baucom, China Grove; daughter JoAnn Queen, Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Johnny Cook. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Linn- Honeycutt Funeral, Landis.

Hallie Edmond Blalock

ALBEMARLE — Hallie Edmond Blalock, 89, 40312 Tower Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999)at Stanly Manor Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 6, 1910, in Stanly County, Mrs. Blalock was a daughter of the late Marshall and Esther Fraley Blalock. A retired textile employee and farmer, he was a member of Palestine United Methodist Church.

His wife, Eva Cagle Blalock, died Sept. 13, 1992.

Survivors include son Gary E. Blalock, Albemarle; daughter Donna B. Hoffman, Gaffney, S.C.; foster son Matt Cagle, Albemarle; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Palestine United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Caroll Flack. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Thelma Helton Gantt

GASTONIA — Thelma Helton Gantt, 84, Gastonia, sister of Garnelle Hilliard, Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at the Brian Center, Gastonia.

Services: 11 a.m.Saturday, Ward Funeral Home. Burial, Gaston Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Walter ‘Gene’ Goodlett

The funeral will be Sunday for Walter Eugene “Gene”Goodlett, 72, 913 Hawkinstown Road, who died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born April 19, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodlett was a son of Noisey Witherspoon Goodlett, Salisbury, and the late John H. Goodlett. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired as a mail handler with Southern Railway.

Mr. Goodlett was a member of Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, where he was a trustee and a member of the Altar Guild and the Men’s Booster Club. He was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County and fire commissioner of Ellis Cross Country Fire Department.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the VFW and J.C. Price American Legion Post 107. He was a former president of the Spencer Optimist Club.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Irene Beatty Goodlett; sons Walter Eugene Goodlett Jr., Sterling, Va., and Andre Larkin Goodlett, Raleigh; brothers Joe I. Goodlett, Landover, Md., and Billy F. Goodlet and Roy Lee Goodlett, both of Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services: 5 p.m. Sunday, Moore’s Chapel AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. T. Anthony Spearman. The body will be placed in the church at 4. Burial, 11 a.m. Monday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home on Hawkinstown Road.

David Hoke Goodman

David Hoke Goodman, 70, Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 14, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodman was a son of the late David Luther and Addie Lyerly Goodman. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College. A member of Union Lutheran Church, he had been employed with Food Lion.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Saturday, Union Lutheran Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris.

Visitation: None.

Edwin Joseph Grabowski

The funeral will be Saturday for Edwin Joseph Grabowski, 68, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 17, 1931, in Moosie, Pa., Mr. Grabowski was a son of the late Joseph and Victoria Wayno Grabowski. Educated in the Moosie schools and at various electronic schools, he was employed as a technician with RCAElectronics. He was a Roman Catholic.

Survivors include wife Elmina Hudson Grabowski; stepsons Fred Tomaini, Asheville, Steven Tomaini, Rockville Centre, N.Y., and Denny Tomaini, Crawfordville, Fla.; stepdaughter Mitzi Proctor, Burlington, Vt.; brothers Joe Grabowski, Marathon, Fla., and Richard Grabowski, Berline, N.J.; sister Clara Sussman, Vero Beach, Fla.; nine step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Carl Sachtleben, pastor, St.John’s Lutheran Church. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

‘Lib’ Johnson Hopkins

Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Johnson Hopkins, 79, 323 W. Council St., died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born June 5, 1920, in Charleston, W.Va., Mrs. Hopkins was a daughter of Eva Elaine Leftridge Johnson, Charleston, and the late Charles “Charlie” Johnson. A graduate of the Charleston schools, she was a retired domestic worker. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and its Senior Missionary Circle.

Her husband, Thomas Edison Hopkins, died March 10, 1989.

Survivors include sons Thomas Hopkins, East Spencer, Samuel Hopkins, Clinton, Md., John Hopkins, Maryester, Fla., and Reginald Hopkins, of the home; daughters Annette Hopkins, Patterson, N.J., Rose Neely, Betty Lyman, Mary Alice Brown and Dorothy Alexander, all of Salisbury, and Elaine Corpening Granite Quarry; 30 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Bessie Watts Lee

The funeral will be Sunday for Bessie Watts Lee, 91, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 19, 1908, in Iredell County, Mrs. Lee was a daughter of the late George Lester and Grace Brown Watts. A homemaker, she attended Community Baptist Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, David Earl Lee, died Jan. 2, 1989.

Survivors include sons Thomas Lee, of the home, David E. Lee Jr., Sebastian, Fla., Jim Lee, China Grove, Harold Lee, Salisbury, and Don Lee, Mount Mourne; daughters Jean Lee Holloway and Linda Sue Brady, both of Salisbury; sisters Hettie Patterson, China Grove, and Katie Walker, Burnsville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ted Davis, pastor, First Freewill Baptist Church, China Grove. Burial,Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

James ‘Howard’ Moss

James “Howard”Moss, 81, 303 Wellington Hills Circle, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 28, 1918, in Gaston County, Mr., Moss was a son of the late Ben and Maggie Robinson Moss. He was a graduate of Belmont High School and attended Belmont Abbey College.

He had worked for 40 years with Moss Rexall Drug in Gastonia and was in the salvage business in Deland, Fla. He was property manager for the condominiums at Wellington Hills.

Mr. Moss was a member of First Baptist Church and its Whitehead Bible Sunday School Class, Gastonia Masonic Lodge 369 AF&AM and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was instrumental in organizing West Cramerton Baptist Church in West Cramerton and was a past member of the First Baptist churches in Gastonia and Deland,Fla.

Survivors include wife Carol Ballard Moss, whom he married June 18, 1940; daughter Mrs. Don (Nancy) Moss Morra, Sarasota, Fla.; brother William Moss, Gastonia; sisters Helen Moss, West Cramerton, and Zula Reeves, Blairsville, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phil Cooley, pastor, and the Rev. Tom Roberts. The Whitehead Bible Sunday School Class will be seated as a group at the service. Graveside service, 2 p.m. Saturday, Gaston Memorial Park Mausoleum, Gastonia. Masonic rites by Gastonia Masonic Lodge.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Hulda Taylor Nolley

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Hulda Taylor Nolley, 85, Nolley Road, who died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at her home after several months of declining health.

Born May 20, 1914, in Davie County, Mrs. Nolley was a homemaker. She had worked at Erwin Mills for several years and was a lifetime member of Liberty United Methodist Church.

Her husband of 63 years, William Roy Nolley, died Aug. 30, 1994.

Survivors include son Edwin Nolley, Sherrills Ford; daughter Ann N. Hancock, Mocksville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Liberty United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Park. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Baxter L. Wyatt

Baxter L. Wyatt, 83, Madison,Ga., formerly of Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 9, 1999)in Madison.
