HILL Will Rogers Roger Basinger, 64, Gold Hill, died Wednesday (Dec. 8,
1999) at his home after a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 4, 1935, in Rowan County, Mr. Basinger
was a son of the late Walter M. and Iris Culp Basinger. He was educated in the Rowan
County schools. Retired, he had been a truck driver with Food Lion for 15 years. He was a
member of Luthers Lutheran Church, where he was on the church board and served on
the church council and the property and cemetery committees. He was also a member of
Keller Memorial Lodge 657 and Rowan County Shrine Club.
Survivors include wife Clara Mae Shaver Basinger,
whom he married July 5, 1958; sons Christopher M. Basinger, Salisbury, and Danny R.
Basinger, Gold Hill; brothers Tom Basinger, Hickory, and Emanuel C. Basinger, Richfield;
sisters Stella B. Kirk, Richfield, Jennie Polizzi and Anne Love Henry, both of New London,
Ruby Waeisner, Isabella Rowland and Claudine Hinson, all of Albemarle; and three
grandchildren.

Nancy Lear Gulledge
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Saturday for
Nancy Lear Gulledge, 79, 8830 Dogwood Drive, who died Tuesday (Dec. 7, 1999) at Carolina
Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville, S.C., from injuries sustained in an automobile
accident.
Born May 9, 1920, in Chesterfield County, S.C.,
Mrs. Gulledge was a daughter of the late John Haney and Laura Jane Lear Lear. She retired
from Cannon Mills in 1982 after 34 years at Plant 1 No. 7 winding room. A member of
Liberty Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and was a soloist.
Her husband, William David Gulledge, preceded her
in death.
Survivors include sons David Harold Gulledge,
Hartsville, S.C., and Gary Eugene Gulledge, El Paso, Texas; daughters Faye G. Hancock,
Bernice G. Mills, Margaret G. Clay and Ethel Wallace, all of Kannapolis; brother J.B.
Lear, Wadesboro; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren
and step-great-grandchildren.

Sparger, 92, Hickory, formerly of Spencer, died Wednesday (Dec. 8, 1999) at Frye Regional
Medical Center, Hickory.
Born Dec. 7, 1907, in Lexington, Mrs. Sparger was
a daughter of the late Zachariah Richard and Hattie Freedle Shoaf. A graduate of Lexington
High School and Salisbury Business College, she had been employed in the offices of Dixie
Furniture Co., Lexington, Carolina Beverage Corp., Cheerwine Bottling Co. and Stanback Co.
She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, a former member of the church council and a
member of the Grand International Auxiliary of Brotherhood Locomotive Engineers.
Her husband, John Whitfield Sparger, died Jan. 16,
1971.
Survivors include son John W. Sparger Jr.,
Hickory; one grandson; and two step-grandsons.
