Joseph Victor Barbee

CHINA GROVE — Joseph Victor Barbee, 73, 1095 Robert St., died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 17, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Barbee was a son of the late Benjamin Greer and Thelma Spears Barbee. Retired from Linn Corriher Mills, he was a Lutheran.

His wife, Charlotte Barbee, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Carolyn Stamper, China Grove; brother Ray Barbee, China Grove; sister Nina Barbee Swicegood, Salisbury; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, West Lawn Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Horace King.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

M. Frances Beaver

M. Frances Beaver, 68, died Saturday (Dec. 4, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after four years of declining health.

Born Jan. 2, 1931 in Rowan County, she was a daughter of Hazel Ross Barringer Chamberlaine of Salisbury and the late John Banks Barringer. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was employed by Rowan Manufacturing. She was a Baptist.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Ernest Junior “June” Beaver, whom she married April 11, 1947; son Melvin Beaver, Salisbury; daughter Kay Adams, Salisbury; brother Curtis Barringer, Salisbury; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, conducted by the Rev. Steve Holshouser, pastor, and the Rev. Clarence Sifford, pastor of Salem Lutheran Church. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial in Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Charlotte Chatman

Charlotte Chatman, New Orleans, La., a former longtime resident of Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 21, 1999) in New Orleans, La.

She retired in 1991 from Livingstone College, where she had taught French and German since 1950. She was chairperson of the Humanities Division and was advisor to the Pan-Hellenic Council for many years.

There are no immediate survivors.

Funeral services were held in New Orleans, La., on Nov. 23.

 

Dorothy Polley Collins

Dorothy Polley Collins, 78, Salisbury, died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999)at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after two months of illness.

Born June 18, 1921, in Lydney, Gloucestershire, England, Mrs. Collins was a daughter of the late Sidney Bertram and Theresa Sanford Polley. Educated in England, she worked for both the United States and British governments during World War II.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Cleveland, and St. James Episcopal Church, Mooresville. She was active with the Episcopal Church Women and the altar guilds of both churches.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Claude A. Collins, whom she married March 15, 1945; sons David Collins, Simpsonville, S.C., and Graham Collins, Deland, Fla.; brother Sidney Glenn Polley, Lydney, England; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Christ Episcopal Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Johnson and the Rt. Rev. Gary Gloster, bishops of North Carolina, and the Rev. Harold Eisner, priest-in-charge at Christ Episcopal. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Charles T. Lentz

LANDIS — Charles T. Lentz, 725 S. Highland Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

C.L. Lilly

C.L. Lilly, 83, 618 Hawkinstown Road, died Friday (Dec. 3, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Minnie Campbell Lyman

The funeral will be held today for Minnie Campbell Lyman, 71, 1189 Safrit Road, who died Friday (Dec. 3, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 9, 1928, in Iredell County, Mrs. Lyman was a daughter of the late Gus and Florence Benfield Campbell. Educated in the Iredell County schools, she was a homemaker.

Her husband, Kenneth D. Lyman, died Feb. 1, 1996.

Survivors include daughters Myrtle Flores, Rockwell, and Margaret Murphy, Richmond, Va.; brother Junior Campbell, Mocksville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. today, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Charles Carver. Burial, 2 p.m., National Cemetery, Salisbury.

 

Ruby Robertson Safrit

The funeral will be Wednesday for Ruby Myrtle Robertson Safrit, 85, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Dec. 4, 1999) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born Aug. 30, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was a daughter of the late George Durham and Blanche Roberts Robertson. She was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School and a lifelong member of Faith Baptist Church, Faith.

An insurance agent for Reserve Life for over 15 years, she managed Yadkin House Apartments from 1980 to 1990.

A son, Carl Wayne Safrit, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Carl Adam Safrit; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Service of remembrance, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Faith Baptist Church, Faith, conducted by the Rev. Charles Brawley. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: After the service in the church fellowship building.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Shively

GATES — Charles Wayne “Chuck” Shively, 19, Hazelton Road, died Friday (Dec. 3, 1999) from injuries sustained in a fall in Rowan County.

Born in Portsmouth, Va., Mr. Shively was a son of Connie Liverman Shively, Elizabeth City, and Henry T. Shively, Gates. He worked in the maintenance and repair of communication towers.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sister Cindy S. Bazemore, Corapeake; and brothers Bill Shively, Richmond, Va., and P-Wee Liverman, Mayo, Fla.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Miller Funeral Home Chapel, Gatesville. After the service, the body will be cremated.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Cindy S. Bazemore, Southern Pines Mobile Home Park, Lot 76, Corapeake.

 

David W. Swaringen

ALBEMARLE - David Wayne Swaringen, 53, 904 N. Long St. Extension, Oakboro, died Sunday (Dec. 5, 1999) at his home.

Born July 6, 1946, in Stanly County, he was a son of Bradford Otis and Sarah Lou Swaringen of Norwood. He had retired from Edward’s Wood Products, Marshville.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Phyllis Harrington Swaringen; daughter Cynthia Swaringen, Ridgecrest; stepdaughters Cathy Glenham, Atlanta, Sherry Burris, Oakboro, Debora Watkins, Albemarle; sisters Patricia Almond, New London, and Barbara Harrington, Aquadale; brother Glenn Swaringen, Dallas, Tex.; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, First Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Shelton, the Rev. Jim Faggart and Wayne Efird. Burial in Porter Church cemetery, Norwood.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Long Street Extension, Oakboro.

 

Daniel ‘Mitch’ Zortman
Ronald ‘Rowdy’ Brooks

CORAPEAKE — Joint funeral services will be held Wednesday for Daniel Foster “Mitch” Zortman and his stepson, Ronald Dean “Rowdy” Brooks, both of Adams Swamp Road, who died Friday (Dec. 3, 1999) from injuries sustained in a fall in Rowan County.

Mr. Zortman, 40, the son of Jonathan J. and Vickie McBurney Zortman of Chesapeake, Va., was born in Bloomington, Ill. He owned Quality Tower Painting Co., a repair and maintenance service for communication towers. He was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mr. Brooks, 16, was the son of Wanda Yawn Zortman. Born in Charlotte, was employed with his stepfather.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Zortman is survived by wife Wanda Yawn Zortman; other stepson Shaun Brooks, Corapeake; sisters Teresa Ann Fortner, Norfolk, Va., Tina Marie Atherton, Phoenix, Ariz., Toni Lea Parish, Chesapeake, Va., and Tracy Swinehart, Indianapolis, Ind.; and brothers Richard A. and John J. Zortman, both of Chesapeake, Va.

Mr. Brooks is survived by his mother; a brother, Shaun Brooks, Corapeake; and grandparents Grace and Bobby Brooks and Jonathan and Vickie Zortman.

Services: Joint funeral, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Miller Funeral Home Chapel, Gatesville. Mr. Zortman will be buried at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. After the services, Mr. Brooks’ body will be cremated.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Adams Swamp Road.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
