Evelyn Poole Crook, 78,
Salisbury, died Thursday (Dec. 2, 1999) at her home after several months of illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1921, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Crook was a daughter of the late Clyde C. and Mary Stoner Poole. Educated in
the Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran
Church and WELCA.
Her husband, Rufus Clinton
Crook, died Oct. 31, 1989.
Survivors include son Eddie
Crook, Salisbury; daughter Joan C. Everhardt, Richfield; five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.

Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1938, in Jay,
Fla., Ms. Culp was a daughter of the late Walker Eugene and Hattie Savannah Cobb Nowling.
She was a retired registered nurse.

John Vistor Edmiston
John Vistor Edmiston, 84,
died Friday (Nov. 26, 1999). He was a native of Rowan County.
Mr. Edmiston was the son of
the late Robert Samuel and Ethel Johnston Edmiston. Educated in the Mount Ulla schools and
at North Carolina State University, he had retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a
lifetime member of Prospect Presbyterian Church, Mooresville.
He was a member of Harbor
City Masonic Lodge AF&AM, Melbourne, Fla.; Scottish Rite, Orlando, Fla.; and Melbourne
York Rite Bodies and Azan Shrine Temple in Melbourne, Fla. He was a past patron of Harbor
City Chapter 263, Order of the Eastern Star, also in Melbourne, Fla.
Survivors include wife Sarah
Powell Edmiston; sons John V. Edmiston Jr., Melbourne, Fla., and Robert Edmiston, Palm
Shores, Fla.; daughters Sarah Oliver, Cocoa, Fla., Martha Jordan, Bostic, Louise Wyss,
Mill Spring, and Mary Hansma, Melbourne, Fla.; brothers Sam and Bill Edmiston, both of
Mount Ulla; sister Jane Miller, Asheboro; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at Harrelson Funeral Home inCaroleen. The Rev. J.J. Powell officiated. Burial was
at Cleveland Memorial Park in Cleveland.

Albemarle.
Born Dec. 5, 1946, in Union
County, Mr. Gardner was a son of the late Hoyle and Kate Gardner. He was self-employed in
home construction.
A stepson, Dale Slough,
preceded him in death.

Sloop Gardner; sons Casey and Wesley Gardner, both of Monroe, and Trent Gardner, Indian
Trail; stepsons O.V. Gardner, Scott Gardner and Gerald Wade Slough, all of Albemarle; and

Lewis Ray 'Gator' Heilig

for Lewis Ray "Gator" Heilig, 67, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Dec. 2, 1999) at
Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 24, 1932, in Rowan
County, Mr. Heilig was the son of the late Ray Hubbard and Wilma Lefler Heilig. He was
educated in the Rowan County schools. He was employed as a truck driver by Isenhour Brick
for a number of years and had worked for Parrish Bakery and Martin Marietta Co. A veteran,
he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a former member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church and a member of Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 14, where he was
sergeant at arms.
Survivors include companion
of 31 years Alice Williams, of the home; daughters Vickie Hamilton and Lynn Sides, both of
Salisbury; brothers Jerry Wayne and Tony Mitchell Heilig, both of Salisbury; sisters Norma
Sue Shell, China Grove, Judy Lee Potosnak, Breiningsville, Pa., Vera Mae Goodman,
Rockwell, and Carol H. Morris and Delores H. Stanley, both of Salisbury; three
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Koonts, 89, 2045 Old Linwood Road, died Wednesday (Dec. 1, 1999) at Sunbridge Care and
Rehabilitation of the Triad, High Point.
Born Jan. 1, 1910, in
Davidson County, Mr. Koonts was a son of the late Jacob L. and Callie E. Warner Koonts. A
member of Linwood United Methodist Church, he had retired from the furniture industry.
A U.S. Army Air Corps
veteran of World War II, he was a member of VFW Post 3054 and the American Legion.
Survivors include wife
Fannie Vickers Poole Koonts; stepsons Crammer L. Poole, Lebanon, and Jerry R. Poole,
Lexington; stepdaughters Mrs. Cliff (Joycie P.)Hughes and Mrs. Abe (Lynne P.) Cassidy,

Raleigh, Mrs. Spencer was a daughter of the late Gurney and Irma Broughton Burnette. A
member of God's Tabernacle Spirited Baptist Church, she had worked for Lil General Stores,
Charlotte, for 15 years.
Her husband, Oakley Spencer,
preceded her in death.

Lloyd St., died Thursday (Dec. 2, 1999) at her home after four months of serious illness.
Born Dec. 23, 1914, in
Oconcee County, S.C., Mrs. Wilks was a daughter of the late Jip Perry and Bessie Perry
Brown. A graduate of the Oconcee County, S.C., schools, she was a homemaker and co-founder
of J.O. Wilks Woodyard and Construction Co. and Home Improvements and Rentals.
She was a member of Mount
Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury, and past president of its Senior Missionary Circle. She
was also a member of the Deaconess Board, where she had served as corresponding secretary.
She also served on the church finance committee.
She was associated with the
Rowan Baptist Association for many years and received a certificate from its Women's
Auxiliary for 20 years of service.
Her husband, J.O. Wilks,
died July 15, 1999.
Survivors include son Dennis
J. Wilks, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Wright, 89, formerly of Kannapolis, died Thursday (Dec. 2, 1999) at Palmetto Baptist
Medical Center, Columbia, S.C., after a month of declining health. A resident of
Kannapolis since 1936, she moved to Columbia, S.C., four months ago to live with a
daughter, Mrs. Cy (Patty W.) Wentworth.
Born Jan. 10, 1910, in
Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Wright was a daughter of the late Charles Gilliam and Woodie
Hunt Moon. A homemaker, she was a member of Skyland Baptist Church.
Her husband, Robert David
Wright, died Aug. 21, 1984.
Survivors include sons
Derald Wright, Kannapolis, and Kenneth Wright, Bessemer City; other daughters Mrs. Bob
(Brenda W.) Farris and Regina W. Duncan, both of Kannapolis; brother C.W. Moon, Salisbury;
