School really begins today for the Salisbury Post. More than 2,000 copies of the paper
will be delivered each Tuesday to schools in this area, beginning today. The papers are
part of the Posts Newspapers in Education program, an effort generously supported by
a number of sponsors in the community. Why
Newspapers in Education? The Post and countless other papers in the country undertake
initiatives like this each year to accomplish several goals. First of all, the program
encourages teachers to use the newspaper
Having newspapers in the classroom also encourages
literacy. Young people need to learn early on that reading isnt something you only
do with a book when someone forces you. Its a way to keep up with the world around
you, to be entertained and to expand your horizons. Newspapers are great at all those
things.
Obviously, the Post has a vested interest in the
success of Newspapers in Education. Once young people recognize how valuable a resource a
newspaper can be, theyre more likely to turn to their local paper throughout their
lives.
In addition to copies of the Post, schools
participating in our Newspapers in Education program will receive some extra supplements.
The first one, scheduled to go out Sept. 21, will take a look at conflict resolution. And
a series of educational pages will be published in the Post throughout the year to
complement the schools character education curriculum, with each one focusing on a
different character trait.
So welcome, young readers. Enjoy the Salisbury
Post as you work your way through this academic year. The Post is here to help you, in
school and out.
