Thieves cut a hole in the roof of a local credit union Sunday night, disabled the alarm
systems and stole an undetermined amount of money. Employees of the Salvaho Federal Credit Union, 2116 Statesville Blvd., did not
discover the theft until they arrived at work on Monday morning.
Salisbury Police and the Federal Bureau of
Investigation spent much of Monday at the credit union, in the Marketplace shopping center
across from the Salisbury Mall, and they are still investigating.
Salisbury Police Capt. Mark Wilhelm said he
believes more than one person broke into the credit union.
The thieves cut a hole in the roof and disabled
the alarms. They shut down all the computer systems and broke into the safe.
An undetermined amount of money was stolen, but
customers can be at ease because the money is federally insured.
Since the computer lines were cut, both branches
of the credit union the second is located next to the Hefner VA Medical Center
were out of service Monday.
Salvaho President Jimmy Kerns said the VA branch
should open some time today.
The Statesville Boulevard branch should be
operational by Wednesday or Thursday.
Salvaho customers may still use the automatic
teller machine. If customers have any questions, Kerns said both branches will be taking
calls.
The investigation is continuing, and police ask
that anyone with information regarding the crime call the police at 638-5340.
