Willie ‘Bill’ Poteat

Willie Lenora “Bill” Poteat, 82, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at his home after a month of illness.

Born June 17, 1917, in Rowan County, Mr. Poteat was the son of the late Mackie Lenora Wood and Robert Blocke Poteat. Educated in the Davidson County Schools, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Poteat retired from Food Town in 1980 as a truck driver. He was a member of Phaniels Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Elvie Irene Russ Poteat, whom he married Oct. 18, 1940; two sons, Jimmie Lee Poteat, of the home, and Kenneth “Dwight” Poteat, Rockwell; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Mary) Strickland, Abbeville, La.; a brother, Hank Poteat, Spring Branch, Texas; three sisters, Ada Rogers, High Point, Mary Frances Cobb, China Grove, and Betty Greene, Davidson; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Phaniels Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Taylor, pastor, and the Rev. Ray Yarbrough. Burial, church cemetery, with military graveside services by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

William Richardson

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.—William Randolph “Randy” Richardson, 46, 270 Broadmeadow Road, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) in Marlborough Hospital.

Born July 6, 1953, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Arthur H. Richardson of Kannapolis and the late Mary Elizabeth Eanes Richardson. Educated in the Kannapolis City Schools, Mr. Richardson was employed with Round-up Records in Cambridge, Mass.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include stepmother Jean Hurst Richardson, Kannapolis; two brothers, Thad W. Richardson, Kannapolis, and Chad L. Richardson, Marlborough, Mass.; and companion Alice Kenney, Marlborough, Mass.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. R. J. Hammond. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

James ‘Buck’ Brewer

KANNAPOLIS — James L. “Buck” Brewer, 78, formerly of 1413 Pleasant Ave., died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Concord Nursing Center.

Born June 8, 1921, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brewer was the son of the late John L. and Ada White Brewer. He worked at Cannon Mills Plant No. 4 for 15 years, then at Robo Car Wash for seven years and at McDonalds for five years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines and enjoyed building and flying remote controlled airplanes as a hobby.

A stepdaughter, Barbara Shirlene Lambert, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Eva Agnes Carter Brewer; a stepson, Terry Woodrow Williams, Kannapolis; five step- grandchildren; and two step- great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service 3 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dean Mitchum, pastor, Ben Avenue Freewill Baptist Church.

Visitation: None.

 

John Nelson McDaniel Sr.

MOCKSVILLE — John Nelson “Scooter” McDaniel Sr., 72, of Oak Grove Church Road, died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at his home.

Born March 9, 1927, in Davie County, Mr. McDaniel was the son of the late Sallie Leonard and William H. McDaniel Sr. He was the owner and operator of John N. McDaniel and Sons and a life long member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was also a member of Mocksville Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M. 134.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Whitaker McDaniel; two sons, John N. McDaniel Jr. and Randy D. McDaniel, both of Mocksville; three daughters, Diane Lee, Maryland, GraceHilton, Mocksville, and Angela Dishman, Hiddenite; two brothers, Joe McDaniel, Winston-Salem, and James F. McDaniel, Atlanta; four sisters, Ruth Wilkins, Monroe, Betty Wright, Pfafftown, Doris Gaither, Winston-Salem, and Loraine Blackwood, Cooleemee; seven grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Stewart, the Rev. Donald Funderburk and the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster. Burial, church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Dist. II, Memorial Honor Guard, VFW, and graveside rites by Mocksville Masonic Lodge No. 134.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Eaton Funeral Home.

Elsie Mae Clay Smith

KANNAPOLIS— Elsie Mae Clay Smith, 84, 1012 Oakshade Ave., died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born Nov. 4, 1914, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late Wherry and Pearl Petrea Clay. She worked at Robinson’s Florist in Midway for many years and was a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Homer Lee Smith; a son, Bobby Lee Smith, China Grove; two daughters, Shirley Towell, Raleigh, and Toni Bruce, Concord; two brothers, Harry and Bill Clay, both of Concord; three sisters, Iva Sehorn, Concord, Ruth Cauble, Albemarle, and Gena Motley, Ocean Isle Beach; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian Hammonds. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Jason S.L. Brewer

CONCORD — Jason S.L. Brewer, 28, of 2907 Linker Ave., died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center from injuries in a train accident.

Born April 14, 1971, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Brewer was the son of Phyllis Ann Riley Brewer of Concord and Wayne Craven Brewer of Kannapolis. Educated at Winecoff Elementary School and Northwest Cabarrus High School, he worked for B and L Cabinet Shop in Kannapolis.

In addition to his mother and father, survivors include his wife, Brandi Jones Brewer; a son, Brian Brewer, of the home; a daughter, Brittany Brewer, of the home; a brother, Scott Brewer, Concord; a sister, Shelli Brewer, Concord; grandparents, Endle and Doris Riley, Kannapolis; and a step-grandfather, Harold D. Lear, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Faith Covenant Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Howard and the Rev. Darrell Coble. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum, Kannapolis.

Josephine Faw White

KANNAPOLIS — Josephine Faw White, 76, 311 Goldston St., died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center after a serious illness of four weeks.

Born June 23, 1923, in Wilkes County, Mrs. White was the daughter of the late Zeb and Mary Jane Faw.

She retired from the No. 7 spinning room at Fieldcrest Cannon Plant No. 1 and attended North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Lonnie White; five sons, Lonnie Wayne White, Kannapolis, Tommy White, Bishopville, S.C., Terry White, China Grove, Joe White, Landis, and Billy White, of the home; a daughter, Helen White Weddington, Rockwell; a sister, Mary Ferrell, Rockwell; 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Leon Hawks and the Rev. Bruce Sheets. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

James Douglas Wynn

The funeral will be today for James Douglas Wynn, 62, of Salisbury, who died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at his home after a short illness.

Born Dec. 31, 1936, in Calvin Va., Mr. Wynn was the son of the late Curtis and Gertrude Marie Frazier Wynn. Educated in the Appalachia, Va., schools, he retired from the automobile industry and was a member of Bible Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nita Grubb Wynn; two sons, James “Jimmie” D. Wynn Jr. and Gary Keith Wynn, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; a stepson, Jeffrey David Grubb, Salisbury; two daughters, Yvonne Wynn Gardner and Danielle Lee Wynn, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mary Jane Grubb, Big Stone Gap, Va.; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Bible Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Buddy Hoffner, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation: Visitation was Saturday night at Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Martha Gulledge Rushing

CHARLOTTE — Martha Gulledge Rushing, 100, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Hunter Woods Nursing Home.

Born March 13, 1899, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Rushing was the daughter of the late Jim and Elizabeth Sellers Gulledge. She was a homemaker and attended the Westside Church of the Nazarene, Kannapolis.

Her husband, George D. Rushing, preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, Flora Lee Mills, Ruby, S.C., Otha Thomas and Dorothy Pittman, both of Kannapolis, and Betty Hufflin, Fernadina Beach, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service, 4 p.m. Monday, Crossroads Baptist Church, Ruby, S.C., conducted by the Rev. Charles Savage.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis. The family will also be at the home of daughter Otha Thomas, 113 Newell Ave., Kannapolis, and the family will receive friends at the cemetery an hour before burial.

 

Susie Coy Lawrence Miller

MOCKSVILLE — Susie Coy Lawrence Miller, 91, of Fairfield Road, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born May 30, 1908, in Gillsville, Ga., Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Martha Atkins Miller. She retired from Erwin Mills in Cooleemee and was a charter member of Dutchman Creek Baptist Church.

Her husband, W. J. Miller, died Aug. 20, 1957, after 36 years of marriage. A son, Doyle J. Miller, and a daughter, Mytris M. Barns, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Cletus R. Miller, Mocksville; three daughters, Edna M. Angell, Lathel M. Comb and Texola M. Tucker, all of Mocksville; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 tonight, Davie Funeral Service Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Tuggle and the Rev. Dennis Pressnell. Burial, Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 3-4 p.m. today, Davie Funeral Service Chapel.

 

James Thornwell Neely Jr.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — James Thornwell Neely Jr., 87, of 624 Forest Lane, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Piedmont Medical Center.

Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Neely was the son of the late Lillie Earle Sadler and James Thornwll Neely Sr. A lifelong member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, he was also a past president of the Rock Hill Jaycees and the York County Life Underwriters Association. He was a member of the Rock Hill Cotillion Club and graduated from Presbyterian College in 1933.

Mr. Neely was secretary and treasurer of Neely Motor Company and opened Neely Insurance Co. He retired in 1979.

He served as First Lieutenant in Company I of the Rock Hill National Guard before being called to active duty in 1939. He was promoted to Captain with the Fifth Infantry Division, under Gen. George Patton, was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

Survivors include his wife, Louis C. Neely; a son, James Thornwell Neely III, Rock Hill; a daughter, Mrs. Steve (Lonnie Lou Neely) Rabon, Salisbury; two sisters, Lillie Earle Neely Townsend, Rock Hill, and Sadler Neely Carter, Anderson, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William C. Pender, pastor, and the Rev. Susan L. Denne, associate pastor.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Bass Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, S.C. 29730 or the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

 

Q. D. Bush

Q. D. Bush, 75, 514 N. Cedar St., died Saturday (Aug. 28, 1999) at Autumn Care Nursing Center.

Born Jan. 9, 1924, in Commerce, Ga., Mr. Bush was the son of the late Lena and Hoyt Bush. He attended Price High School and was a veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver for Johnson Concrete for over 38 years.

His wife, Mary M. Bush, and a daughter, Valiere Bush Bell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, David P. Bush I and James A. Bush, both of Salisbury, and Ronald S. Bush, Lillington; two daughters, Harriet Bush Atkins, New York, N.Y., and Terri Bush Wiggins, Salisbury; a brother, Theodore Bush, Salisbury; two sisters, Annie Lois Holt and Isabelle Ford, both of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of David Bush, 3430 Hickory Place, in the Spencer Forest subdivision.

Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.
