Lois Thompson Shelby

Lois Corrine Thompson Shelby, 91, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after several years of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born May 20, 1908, in Haywood County, Mrs. Shelby was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Mittie Roberts Thompson. Educated in the Kankakee, Ill., schools, she and her late husband, Sam Parris Shelby, owned and operated Shelby’s Grocery for 48 years. She was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school for more than 20 years.

A daughter, Vivian Juanitta Williams, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Hubert P. Shelby, Salisbury; brother Clarence Warren Thompson, Mount Holly; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, Trading Ford Baptist Church, and the Rev. Coy Miller.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Memorials: Trading Ford Baptist Church, Music Department, 3600 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

 

Inez Smith Eagle

Inez Smith Eagle, 86, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 14, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Eagle was a daughter of the late William and Louetta Miller Smith. A homemaker, she was educated at Granite Quarry High School and Salisbury Business College. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she had formerly taught Sunday school.

Her husband, the Rev. Eli F. Eagle, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Steve Eagle, Salisbury, Norman S. Eagle, Blueridge, Texas, and Tony Phillips Eagle, Catawba; daughter Susan Waters, Raleigh; stepsons Frank P. Eagle, Salisbury, Glenn Eagle, Durham, and Bobby C. Eagle, Garner; stepdaughters Rose Hoffman, Charlotte, Elva Swicegood, Salisbury, Dewette Trexler, Spencer, and Ruth Marshall, Clemmons; six grandchildren; 26 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 28 step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by Dr. Rick Cockerham, pastor, Calvary Baptist Church. Burial, Union Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials: Southern Piedmont Chapter, Alzheimer’s Disease Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, N.C. 28215-3298.

Martha Joan Michael Spry, 67, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 26, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Willis Talmage Parker, 88, Salisbury, died Friday (Aug. 27, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
