Carl Torbush to attend day held in his honor

By MARK WINEKA
SALISBURY POST

EAST SPENCER — University of North Carolina head football coach Carl Torbush will be the man of the hour Saturday for an East Spencer day in his honor.

“Carl Torbush Day” will include proclamations, a key-to-the-city presentation, the renaming of Heilig Street to Torbush Drive and free food and drinks at Royal Giants Park.

Torbush also will be on hand for autographs. The public is invited to all activities.

The day begins with a mayor’s proclamation at 11 a.m. at Town Hall, followed by several presentations.

The event will then move to Royal Giants Park for free hot dogs and drinks and a chance to meet Torbush and receive his autograph.

Torbush, in his second year as head football coach at North Carolina, grew up on Heilig Street in East Spencer.

“We welcome everybody to come out and participate to let Carl Torbush know we appreciate the kind words he has said about East Spencer through the news media,’’ said the event’s chairman, Alderman John G. Noble, “He has always recognized the town as his home, and we appreciate that.”

Torbush family members from as far away as Tennessee and Georgia are expected to attend. Noble said the coach may have some free Carolina football posters to hand out to some of the early arrivals.

In case of rain, the entire event will be held at the town hall.

Royal Giants Park is located off North Long Street on Robinson Street, just past Andrews Street.

Sponsors for Carl Torbush Day include Cheerwine, Reid’s Square, attorney Marshall Bickett, Eva and David Bingham, the Concord law firm of Plummer, Belo and Russell, the town of East Spencer and Holmes Salvage.

Noble says he has received a lot of calls from UNC alumni planning to attend.

Other guests Saturday will include North Rowan High football coach Roger Secreast and the high school pep band. Noble said all area high school and college coaches are encouraged to attend. Special invitations also have gone out to Rowan County’s law enforcement and judicial community, as well as elected officials in other towns.

Noble is a Rowan County Sheriff’s deputy.
