Schedule firms up for Columbine visit

SALISBURY POST

Four students from Colorado’s Columbine High School are now scheduled to speak to students from eight area schools when they visit in mid-September.

The students and Darryl Scott, father of one of the students killed in the shooting at Columbine, have agreed to come here was a Christian youth rally called U T.U.R.N. ’99.

The Rev. Alan Misenheimer, pastor of Grace Bible Church, has spearheaded the effort, and he is taking a group of local youth to Colorado this week to meet the students who will come here.

Misenheimer said the students will go to local schools on Sept. 16 and 17, prior to the main event on the 18th.

Here’s the schedule:

Thursday, Sept. 16

  • 8:30-10:30 a.m., East Rowan High School, sponsored by East Rowan chapter of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE).
  • 10:30-11:15 a.m., also at East Rowan High, eighth-grade students from Erwin Middle School.
  • 12:30-1:15 p.m., North Hills Christian School.
  • 1:45-2:45 p.m., Salisbury High School.
  • 3-3:45 p.m., South Rowan YMCA. Open to all students.
  • Friday, Sept. 17
  • 9-9:45 a.m., North Rowan High.
  • 10:15-11 a.m., Davie High School.
  • 1-2:45 p.m., North Iredell High School.

At 7 p.m. Sept. 17, Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, one of the student victims at Columbine, will speak at Grace Bible Church, 6725 N.C. 152 E. That is the only event where seats must be reserved, because of the limited seating. Misenheimer said.

The U T.U.R.N. ’99 rally the next day will be open to all. Misenheimer said organizers are still hopeful they will secure a larger facility to accommodate the crowds they expect to attend.

For information or to reserve seating for Scott’s appearance on Sept. 17, call the church at 279-6820. The church also has an Internet Web site at http://www.gracebiblec.org.
