Martin Smith

ROCKWELL - Martin Smith, 67, 504 Depot St., died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at the Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after four years of declining health and three months of serious illness.

Born Aug. 30, 1931, in Rowan County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Mary Eliza Smith and Martin Eddleman. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from Cone Mills and Rustin Furniture Co. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Smith was a member of St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the trustee board.

Survivors include wife Juanita A. Smith; sons Darrell T. and Bryon K. Smith, both of Salisbury; daughter Martina D. Corpening, Granite Quarry; and five grandchildren.

Services:12:30 p.m. Monday, St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. David S. Houston. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Salisbury Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Sunday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Viola Hargrave Dixon

Viola Elaine Hargrave Dixon, 417 Willow Road, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury after three years of declining health.

Mrs. Dixon was a daughter of the late and the Rev. Harold Mauney and Willie Mae Holt Hargrave. A graduate of J.C. Price High School, she received her bachelor’s degree from Livingstone College and a master of education degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also received state teacher certification in primary education.

Mrs. Dixon had retired after 30 years with the Rowan-Salisbury school system. She had taught at Overton Elementary School, Monroe Street School and Henderson Elementary School. She also worked with Upward Bound at Livingstone College and the AKA Summer Reading Program. She was coordinator for Kiwanis Summer Camp and a team member to the National Workshop in Learning Disabilities in Kansas City, Mo.

A member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Dixon was a former member of the senior choir, the Nominations Committee and the United Presbyterian Women. She was also a member of the J.P. Johnson Memorial Society, the Ecunenical Choral Society, the Livingstone Alumni Choir and Trio, Delta XIOmega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Classroom Teachers Association. She was a former secretary of the North Carolina Teachers Association and a past president of the North Carolina Association of Educators.

Survivors include husband Wilford G. “Baby”Dixon; son Timothy M. “Tim”Dixon, Salisbury; daughters Tonette V. Dixon-Mack, Florence, S.C., and Tanya H. Dixon-Neely, Salisbury; brothers Michael “Mervyn”Hargrave, Hollis, Long Island, N.Y., and the Rev. William H. Hargrave, Englewood, N.J.; sisters Thenya H. Torrence, Lexington, Katherine H. Maxwell, Hollis, Long Island, N.Y., Haroldyne F. Hargrave, North Brunswick, N.J., and Lottye H. Reid, Lakewood, N.J.; and five grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Cora Jones Fleming

WOODLEAF - Cora Jones Fleming, 50, 7720 Woodleaf Road, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after 19 months of serious illness.

Born Aug. 20, 1949, in Warren County, she was a daughter of Annie Allen and Nathaniel Jones, both of Norlina. Mrs. Fleming was a graduate of John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton and Winston-Salem State University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education.

She taught three years at Northside Elementary School in Warren County and 24 years at Faith Elementary School, Faith. Amember of Jones Chapel Church, Ridgeway, she was a NCAE representative for one year. She also served on the parent-teacher advisory council of Woodleaf Elementary School.

Survivors include husband Clement B. Fleming; sons Jeffery L. Fleming, Greensboro, Joel B. Fleming, Asheville, and Jared A. Fleming, of the home; brothers Nathaniel Jones Jr., Norlina, and Martin Jones, Henderson; and sisters Miriam Vann, Henderson and Garcia Lane Jones, Winston-Salem.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Dr. J Henry Smith Foushee

Dr. J Henry Smith Foushee, 76, Winston-Salem, formerly of Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Aug. 13, 1923, in Salisbury, Dr. Foushee was a son of the late Nellie Pearson and J Henry Smith Foushee. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he attended Catawba College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.

A U.S. Air Force physician during the Korean War, Dr. Foushee served on the faculty of Bowman Gray Medical School in Winston-Salem for 16 years. In 1970 he formed his own laboratory and became chief pathologist for Medical Park Hospital, Winston-Salem. He retired in 1995.

He was also a physician’s consultant for the Salisbury VA Medical Center. Dr. Foushee was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem, and the Forsyth County, N.C. and American medical associations.

Survivors include wife Elizabeth Campbell Foushee, whom he married in 1951; son Smith Foushee III, Charlotte; daughter Elizabeth Cunningham, Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Monday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Frank E. McKenzie. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem.

Visitation:The family will see friends following the service at the cemetery.

Shiver Lee McCraw

SPENCER — Shiver Lee McCraw, 83, of Spencer, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at his residence after four months of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born Aug. 13, 1916, in Cleveland County, Mr. McCraw was a son of the late Creola McCraw. He was educated in the Cleveland County school system. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he participated in the Normandy invasion and was also stationed in the Phillipines. A member of the American Legion, he had retired from the Duke Power Steam Plant after 37 years with the company.

A member of Trinity Baptist Church, he attended the Men’s Bible Class. He had served 23 years as church treasurer and had also served as a deacon. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and a former member of the Rowan County Rescue Squad.

His first wife, Iris Martin McCraw, died Jan. 25, 1994.

Survivors include wife Joyce Beatty King McCraw, whom he married June 11, 1994; sons Dan McCraw, Belmont, Allen King, Oakboro, and Dale King, Richfield; daughters Mrs. Grady (Sharon) Cauble, Salisbury, Mrs. Herman Beck, High Point, and Mrs. Yvonne Stallings, Surfside Beach, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Trinity Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. MaxMills, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan County Veteran’s Council.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Willie Lee Pepper

Willie Lee Pepper, 84, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after one year of declining health and one day of serious illness.

Born Feb. 6, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Pepper was a son of the late Nannie Webb and W.W. Pepper. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was employed by Southern Railway for 18 years and later worked for Boren Brick. He was a former member of Union Lutheran Church.

His first wife, Fannie M. Overman Pepper, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Nina Trexler Pepper, whom he married Feb. 19, 1949; sons Wesley Pepper, Spencer, Willie E. Pepper, Carolina Beach, and Melvin and Walter Pepper, both of Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Allan (Donna) Eddings, Nashville, Tenn., Mrs. Rondall (Doris) Everhart and Mrs. Fred (Jo Ann)Propst, both of Salisbury, and Jill Pepper, of the home; a niece, Betty Parker, who was raised in the home; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 3 p.m. Monday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, Trading Ford Baptist Church.

Visitation: 2-2:45 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Trading Ford Baptist Church, Building Fund, 3600 Long Ferry Road, Salisbury, N.C. 28146.

 

Daniel H. Hobbs

LEXINGTON - Daniel Harper Hobbs, 56, of Arvil Hunt Road, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after eight years of declining health and two weeks of critical illness.

Born March 14, 1943, in Davidson County, Mr. Hobbs was a son of the late Veigh Leonard and Julius Gray Hobbs. Mr. Hobbs was a former employee of Blue Ridge Transfer Co., Thomasville. He was a member of Rolling Heights Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Alberta Gillesbie Hobbs; sons Danny and Darrell Hobbs, both of Lexington; brother Gray Hobbs, Lexington; sisters Audrey Hege and Estelle Rummage, both of Lexington; and four grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Rolling Heights Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Sechrest. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Arvil Hunt Road.

 

Myrtle Seamon

MOUNT ULLA - Myrtle Fesperman Seamon, 81, of Triplett Road, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Born Aug. 13, 1918, in Mount Gilead, she was a daughter of the late Edna Allen and Thomas Fesperman. Retired as a seamstress with Troutman Industries in Mooresville, Mrs. Seamon was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband Bryce Seamon, whom she married May 11, 1940; sons Terry Seamon, Mount Ulla, and John Seamon, Statesville; daughter Phyllis Seamon, Mint Hill; brother Avis Fesperman, Mount Gilead; sisters Mary Helms and Doris Loflin, both of Rockwell; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. Sunday, Centenary United Methodist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8 p.m. tonight, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

 

Coy J. Byrd Jeffrey Lynn Chapman

KANNAPOLIS - Coy J. Byrd, 74, and his stepson Jeffrey Lynn Chapman, 42, both of 1225 Dial St., died Thursday (Aug. 19, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle, as a result of an automobile accident in Locust.

The family will at the home of J.W. and Donna Beaver, 3113 Simmons St., Kannapolis.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Darryl Martin Denton

WOODLEAF - Darryl Martin Denton, 32, 2725 South River Church Road, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1999) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Jake Alexander Boulevard.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
