Jerry L. Pethel
KANNAPOLIS Jerry L. Pethel,
63, Kannapolis, died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 1999) at his home after four months of serious
illness.
Born Nov. 3, 1935, in Rowan
County, Mr. Pethel was a son of the late Harry Wertz and Ethel Goss Pethel. A member of
Landis Baptist Church, Landis, he owned and operated Pethels Used Cars for 45 years.
His first wife, Helen Ann Huckabee
Pethel, died in 1968.
Survivors include wife Kay Helms
Pethel; son Darvin D. Pethel, China Grove; daughter Tammy A. Pethel, Concord;
stepdaughters Eva Clanton and Martha Hardin, both of Kannapolis; brothers Harry Pethel
Jr., Baltimore, and Frank Pethel, Kannapolis; sister Patsy Gail Stiller, Salisbury; four
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Elizabeth Walser Head
COOLEEMEE The funeral will
be Friday for Laura Elizabeth Walser Head, 91, Duke Street, who died Tuesday (Aug. 17,
1999) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.
Born Oct. 10, 1907, in Davidson
County, Mrs. Head was a daughter of Mary Hege and William Arthur Walser. Retired from
Burlington Industries, she was a member of Cooleemee Senior Citizens and First Baptist
Church of Cooleemee, where she attended the Elizabeth Overcash Sunday School Class.
Her husband, Luther Head, died in
1978.
Survivors include brothers Coy
Walser, Churchland, and Donald Walser, Spencer; sisters Doris Bass, Salisbury, and Mary
Young, Churchland; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Neal Pridgen
Mary Neal Pridgen, 78, 380 E.
Ridge Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1999) at her home.
Born Jan. 23, 1921, in Richmond
County, Mrs. Pridgen was a daughter of the late Phillip D. and Susan Reynolds Meacham. A
homemaker, she was a raduate of A.L. Brown High School, Kannapolis. She was a member of
First United Methodist Church, Salisbury.
Her husband, Forest Pridgen, died
in 1981.
Survivors include son Thomas E.
Pridgen, Topsail Beach; daughter Suzanne P. Thibodeau, Salisbury; brother Phil Meacham,
Kannapolis; sisters Mrs. Carl (Betty) Spry, Kannapolis, and Mrs. Bill (Marjorie)
Mansfield, Tallahassee, Fla.; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and five step-great-grandchildren.

George Sifford
George Sifford, 66, 1005
Hawkinstown Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a
year of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born April 21, 1933, in Rowan
County, Mr. Sifford was a son of Rosa Rice Sifford, Salisbury, and the late Jessie
Jake Sifford. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired from
Crescent Construction Co. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters,
and the Jubilee Chorus.
Survivors include son Willie
Thomas Mitchell, Salisbury; daughters Linda Wilson, Winville, Mo., and Sylvia Brawley,
Mount Ulla; brother John W. Sifford, Salisbury; sister Carolyn Sifford Lyons, Temple
Hills, Md.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Walter Jim Tex
Manier
The funeral will be Saturday for
Walter Jim Tex Manier, 54, 520 Morelock Lane, Chuckey, Tenn., who died Monday
(Aug. 8, 1999) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Mabton,
Wash.
Born May 11, 1945, in Sullivan
County, Tenn., Mr. Manier was a son of the late Walter L. and Willa Hortence Morelock
Manier. Employed in the construction business since the age of 15, he had been affiliated
with Commercial Contracting, Troy; SIC, Raleigh; American Floating Glass, Kingsport,
Tenn.; Cardinal Floating Glass, Mooresville; and Guardian Industries, Detroit, Mich. He
was employed at Ranger Plant Construction, Abilene, Texas, at the time of his death.
Survivors include wife Carolyn
Davis Manier, who lived in Kannapolis, for a time while taking care of her father;
daughter Shane Manier, Kannapolis; sons Scott Goodman, Kannapolis, and Tony Goins, Arrart;
brother Billy Aden Manier, Greenville, Tenn.; and one grandson.

Clyde C. Everhart
LEXINGTON Clyde Casper
Everhart, 84, 2895 Greensboro St., died Wednesday (Aug. 18, 1999) at Sunbridge Nursing
Home.
Born April 21, 1915, in Davidson
County, Mr. Everhart was a son of the late William Sherman and Sarah Hill Everhart. He had
retired after 45 years with Lexington Telephone Co.
A member of Pilgrim United Church
of Christ and its Mens Bible Class, he was a charter member of Triangle Fire
Department, where he served as chief for 13 years. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served
in the Pacific as an electricians mate second class during World War II.
Survivors include wife Virgie Beck
Everhart; and son Dr. Hugh Everhart, Lexington.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday,
Pilgrim United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Rosser Clap. Burial, church
cemetery. Graveside rites by Davidson County Fireman Honor Guard.

LEXINGTON Major Parks, 34,
Shannon Drive, died Tuesday (Aug. 17, 1999).
Born Dec. 9, 1964, in Davidson
County, Mr. Parks was a son of Jeanette Layton of Lexington. He was employed with Pepsi
Cola Co. A U.S. Army veteran, he served as an infantryman and a Ranger with Special
Forces.
Survivors, in addition to his
mother, include wife Theresa Hedrick Parks; ; stepfather Jay Layton, Lexington; and
brother Robert Lewis Parks, Lexington.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday,
