‘Sandy’ Wilkerson Kelly

The funeral will be Wednesday for Sandra “Sandy” Wilkerson Kelly, 51, 101 Carabelle Circle, who died Monday (Aug. 16, 1999) at her home after two years of declining health and four months of serious illness.

Born July 19, 1948, in Salisbury, Mrs. Kelly was a daughter of Charlie and Mary Holder Wilkerson of Spencer. A graduate of North Rowan High School, Spencer, she had retired as a secretary at the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department due to ill health.

She had earlier worked at Gay and Taylor Insurance Claims Adjustors and for three car dealerships: Byerly Chevrolet, Carter-Mays and Team Chevrolet. She was a member of Landmark Church and was active with the Insurance Women in Salisbury for many years.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Richard L. Kelly; sons Rick Kelly, Salisbury, and Mike Kelly, of the home; brother Carey Wilkerson, Rockwell; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Landmark Church, conducted by the Rev. Benny R. Hillard. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

"Tommy" Locklear

Thomas Edward "Tommy" Locklear, 46, Maple Hill Trailer Park, Horse Shoe, died Saturday (Aug. 14, 1999) at Pardee Memorial Hospital, Hendersonville.

Born Sept. 21, 1952, in Scotland County, Mr. Locklear was a son of Laurin B. Lowery, Albemarle, and the late Annie Lee Locklear Brayboy. He was a carpenter.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include sons Jonah and Joseph Locklear, both of Salisbury; daughter Amy Locklear, Salisbury; and brothers Gary Lee “Henry” and David Locklear, both of Albemarle, Donald Lee Lowery, Mount Gilead, Laurin B. Lowery Jr. and Steve Lowery, both of Troy, and Harold Lowery, New London.

Funeral services were held at 11 this morning at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle. The Rev. Howard Benoy officiated. Burial was at Norview Gardens, Norwood.

At other times the family will be at the home of brother Donald L. Lowery, 109 Columbus Drive, Mount Gilead.

 

Ellis "Logan" McDonald

BADIN -- The funeral will be Wednesday for Ellis Windell "Logan" McDonald, 89, 204 Washington St., who died Friday (Aug. 13, 1999) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born June 29, 1910, in Cumberland County, Mr. McDonald was a son of the late Willie and Millie Bryd McDonald. He was educated in the Cumberland County schools. Retired from Alcoa Badin Works, where he worked for 43 years, he was a member of the Twenty-Five Years Service Club.

He was a member of McDonald Chapel AME Zion Church, where he was a former chairman of the trustee board. He had formerly worked as a plumber.

A son, Eddie Hudson Jr., and a daughter, Dorothy M. Wall, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Justine Jordan McDonald; sons Bobby McDonald, New London, Thomas McDonald and Robert Cody, both of Badin, and Leonard McDonald, Salisbury; daughters Hazel M. Cody, New York City, Gladys M. Smith, Charlotte, and Lenora McDonald and Tonia Griffin, both of Badin; brothers Alberto McDonald, Philadelphia, Hector McDonald, Wade, and Robert McDonald, Baltimore; sisters Sadie Mae McDonald, Fayetteville, and Juanita Smith, New York City; 21 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, McDonald Chapel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Long. Burial, Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 3:30 p.m. at the church.

Kelsey Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Albert B. Martin

FRANKLINVILLE -- Albert Benjamin Martin, 81, 188 Albert Martin Road, died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at his home.

A Rowan County native, Mr. Martin was a retired sergeant with the North Carolina Department of Correction. He was a member of Parks Cross Roads Christian Church.

Survivors include wife Lena Coward Martin; son Jim Martin, Franklinville; sister Emma Crowe, Franklinville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Parks Cross Roads Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. James Turner. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur.

 

Charles Odell Hendrix

MOCKSVILLE -- The funeral will be Wednesday for Charles Odell Hendrix, 84, U.S. 64 East, who died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Born Sept. 21, 1914, in Davie County, Mr. Hendrix was a son of the late Charles and Myrtle Sain Hendrix. A farmer, he owned and founded Hendrix Barbecue. He was a member of Fork Baptist Church.

A son, James A. Hendrix, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Evelyn Rattz Hendrix; son Samuel O. Hendrix, Lexington; daughter Judy H. Osborne, Mocksville; brothers Richard, Thomas and Paul Hendrix, all of Mocksville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bob Hiatt and the Rev. Gary Foster. Burial, Fork Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Judy H. Osborne, 2873 Highway 64 East.

Memorials: Fork Baptist Church, 3140 Highway 64 East, Mocksville, N.C. 27028.

 

Walter Claude Norris

The funeral will be Wednesday for Walter Claude Norris, 70, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 15, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 3, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Norris was a son of the late Frank S. and Annie Hooper Norris. Educated in the Rowan County schools and at Charlotte Fire College, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He had retired from the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

He attended Franklin Baptist Church. He was a life member of VFW Post 3006 and a member of NARFE Chapter 720. A former volunteer with South Salisbury Township Fire Department, he helped start the department in 1950. He was later a member of the Salisbury Fire Department for 18 years.

Survivors include son Randy Norris, Salisbury; daughters Diane Daniels, Rockwell, and Carolyn Overman and Vickie Saine, both of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Franklin Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Twitty, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: None.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Annie Lee Honbarrier Furr

ALBEMARLE -- Annie Lee Honbarrier Furr, 83, 740 N. Second St., died Monday (Aug. 16, 1999) at Britthaven of the Piedmont.

Born Jan. 13, 1916, in Stanly County, Mrs. Furr was a daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Ila Lala Mae Sides Honbarrier. She had retired as a spinner hand at Wiscassett Mills. She later operated a child-care center. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church, Richfield.

Her husband, Crawford Cleo "Jack" Furr, died March 9, 1998.

Survivors include son Marshall D. Furr, Albemarle; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Huneycutt and the Rev. Charles Goodman.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Marshall Furr, 1314 Old Charlotte Road.

 

Kittie Burton Summers

WOODLEAF -- The funeral will be Thursday for Kittie Victoria Burton Summers, 49, 295 Joe Summers Road, who died Friday (Aug. 13, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 10, 1949, in Rowan County, Mrs. Summers was a daughter of the late Clarence Ray and Izetta Ross Burton. A graduate of R.A. Clement High School, Cleveland, she had retired as a bus driver for the Rowan-Salisbury schools. She was a member of Northwest Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include husband Joseph Nathaniel Summers; sons Eric and Vernon Keith Summers, both of Woodleaf; daughters Varonica Jean and Lynda LaToya Summers, both of Woodleaf; brother Clarence Ray Burton Jr., Salisbury; sisters Cottie Bess Wilson, Laurelton, N.Y., Gertrude B. Davis, Margaret A. Honors and Willie Mae Burton, all of Charlotte, Patricia B. Cowan, Salisbury, and Bettye B. Kirkland, Durham; and two grandchildren.

Services: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Northwest Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by Elder Jerry Blackwell and Elder Eddie Burkett. Burial, 2 p.m. Thursday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-noon Thursday, Rowan Funeral Service, Salisbury.
