J.S. Buddy Phelps Jr.J.S. Buddy Phelps Jr., 71, Salisbury, died Monday (Aug. 9,
1999) at his home.
Born Feb. 18, 1928, in Salisbury,
Mr. Phelps was a son of the late Junious Simeon and Sadie Lyerly Phelps. A graduate of
Boyden High School, he was employed by American Bakeries in Salisbury and Charlotte for 40
years before retiring as a manager. He also worked part-time at Catawba Sav-Mor.
Mr. Phelps served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.
His first wife, Betty Garrett
Phelps, died June 18, 1981, and a son, W. Michael Phelps, died Nov. 11, 1979.
Survivors include wife Patricia
Stanford Phelps; son Bruce H. Phelps, Morganton; sisters Norma P. Andrews, Salinas,
Calif., and Frances P. Poole, Salisbury; and three granddaughters.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday,

Mary Ann Jones Leonard
MOCKSVILLE The funeral will
be Thursday for Mary Ann Jones Leonard, 49, Hospital Street Extension, who died Saturday
(Aug. 7, 1999) at her home.
Born Sept. 29, 1949, in
IredellCounty, Ms. Leonard was a daughter of Elsie Seamon Jones, Mocksville, and the late
Charlie Franklin Jones. A Baptist, she had worked as a packer at Lee Jeans since 1991.
Survivors include son Ronald Wayne
Leonard, Cooleemee; daughters Tina Ann and Sandra Renee Leonard, both of Mocksville, and
Angela Denise Leonard, Hamptonville; brother Henry Lee Jones, Mocksville; sister Janet
Faye Jones, Mocksville; and 11 grandchildren.

Lawrence Livengood
Lawrence Harding Livengood, 78,
1630 W. Ridge Road, died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at his home after four years of declining
health.
Born Oct. 22, 1920, in Rowan
County, Mr. Livengood was a son of the late Cletus Christian and Maggie Jane Myers
Livengood. He was educated in the Woodleaf schools. A farmer, he worked for Cannon Mills,
Plant 1, Kannapolis, for 45 years prior to his 1985 retirement. He was a member of
Gays ChapelUnited Methodist Church and the Good Shepherd Sunday School Class.
A son, David Ray Livengood, died
Sept. 14, 1966.

White Livengood; daughters Mrs. Kenneth (Joyce Ann) Kyles and Mrs.Richard (Sandra)
Callahan, both of Salisbury; brother Cecil Livengood, Salisbury; sister Dorothy Hopkins,

The funeral is today for Melvin
Eugene Mel Jordan Jr., 55, 6355 Long Ferry Road, who died Saturday (Aug. 7,
1999) at his home after eight months of declining health.
Born April 11, 1944, in Bessemer,
Ala., Mr. Jordan was a son of the late Melvin E. and Anne Bruns Jordan. Educated in the
Bessemer, Ala., schools, he received his MBA from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
He was chairman of the board of Jordan Group Advertising Agency and Performance Marine of
Salisbury. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mocksville, and Salisbury Country
Club. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in Spain during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include wife Patricia
Barnhardt Jordan, whom he married Aug. 24, 1984; daughters Paige Holton, Raleigh, Jennifer
Engel, Charlotte, Stephanie Jordan, ChapelHill, and Emily Jordan, Winston-Salem; and
sister Rebecca Davis, Talladega, Ala.

David Elwood Jones, 66, Salisbury,
died Monday (Aug. 9, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Todd Thomas Kimball
The funeral will be Wednesday for
Todd Thomas Kimball, 31, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at his home.
Born Dec. 8, 1967, in Rowan
County, Mr. Kimball was a son of Tommy and Carlene Yates Kimball of Salisbury. A 1986
graduate of East Rowan High School, he attended Pfeiffer College. He founded Kimball
Screen Prints &Embroidery. A member of Wittenburg Lutheran Church, he was a former
member of the council.
He was also a member of Keller
Memorial Masonic Lodge 657 and received the degree of Super Excellent Master. This
years York Rite Mason of the Year, he served on the Rowan County Shrine Club board
of directors. A life member of Order of Corks Grand Council of Allied Masonic Degrees, he
was also a member of the Winston-Salem Bodies of Scottish Rite, Salisbury York Rite and
Rowan County Shrine Club.
Survivors, in addition to his
parents, include sister Michelle Kimball Clement, Salisbury; and grandparents John and
Catherine Barringer Kimball, Salisbury.

Rick Weeks, 36, 7940 Howard Ave., died Sunday (Aug. 8, 1999) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in a tractor accident.
Born Oct. 9, 1962, in Battle
Creek, Mich., Mr. Weeks was the son of Evelyn Ann Huntington Weeks, Kannapolis, and George
Francis Weeks, who died in 1993. He owned and operated R.C.W. Express Freight Services
Inc., and Weeks Vending Inc. with his wife, Cindy Freeze Weeks. A veteran, he served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1980 -1984 and was stationed in England for two years. He was a
member of Live to Ride, Ride to Live.
Survivors, in addition to his
mother and wife, include son Michael McHugh Weeks, U.S. Air Force; daughter Angela
Measmer, of the home; and brothers Joseph and Gary Weeks, both of Battle Creek, Mich.
