Ellsworth Nothstine, 92, Mocksville, who died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Brian Center
Nursing and Rehabilitation, Statesville.
Born Aug. 2, 1907, in Columbus, Ohio, Nothstine
was a son of the late Rev. Henry and Hattie Nothstine. Educated in the Lynchburg, Ohio,
schools, he received a doctorate of theology from the American College and Seminary in
Chicago, a doctorate of sacred theology from the International Free Protestant University
in London and a doctorate of philosophy from Roosevelt University. He also received
honorary degrees from six different institutions.
He had served as pastor in Ohio, Indiana,
California and South Carolina. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II
in the Military Police. He was stationed at the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant in Indiana.
Author of a dozen books, he contributed to many
religious magazines and was editor of The Pulpit Workshop for 20 years. He is listed in
the International Directory of Biography in London, Men of
Achievement inCambridge, England, and Whos Who in Ohio. He was a
radio preacher for the Youth for Christ Organization for many years.
He is survived by several nephews.

Rev. Doug Smith, minister of Lexington First Wesleyan Church.

Pond Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Nov. 29, 1945, in Stanly County, Mrs. Carter
was a daughter of Maggie Lanier Simpson Smith, Albemarle, and the late Floyd Lamont
Simpson. She had retired as owner/operator of The Custom Shop, a drapery shop in Locust.
She was a member of West Stanly Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
husband Phillip Carter Jr.; son Mark Richard Carter, Locust; daughter Pam Harwood, Locust;
brothers Cecil Wayne, Charles and Eddie Simpson, all of Albemarle, and Tommy Simpson,
Estill, S.C.; sisters Doris Edwards, New London, and Gail Burroughs, Albemarle; and three
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 this morning at
West Stanly Baptist Church, Albemarle. The Rev. Ron Nichols and the Rev. Phillip Brooks
officiated. Burial was at the church cemetery.
The family will be at the home on Pond Road.

STATESVILLE Glenda Talbert Kepley, 46, 174
Ashbrook Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at her home after an extended illness.
Born June 28, 1953, in Iredell County, Mrs. Kepley
was a daughter of Ruth Deal Talbert, Statesville, and the late William Glenn Talbert.
Employed by Griffin Nationwide Insurance Co., she was a member of Beulah Baptist Church
and the Womens Bible Study Group.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
husband Gary Kepley, formerly of Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Michael (Shelley) Houston,
Carrboro, and Mrs. Harold (Emily) Sain, Statesville; brother Wayne Talbert, Lawrenceville,
Va.; and a grandson.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Beulah Baptist Church,
conducted by the Rev.Henry C. Cook. Burial, church cemetery.

Kirby Neal Smith
The funeral will be Saturday for Kirby Neal Smith,
78, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 24, 1921, in Marmet, W.Va., Mr. Smith
was a son of the late Clyde and Fannie Sloan Smith. The Virginia State Singles Tennis
champion in 1936, he attended the Kings Point U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served with
the Merchant Marines during World WarII.
He had retired from the United States Steamship
Lines Co. after 41 years as a marine engineer. A former Salisbury Jaycee, he was a member
of First United Methodist Church, the Salisbury Lions Club and the Salisbury Elks Lodge.
His first wife, Polly L. Smith, preceded him in
death.
Survivors include wife Gloria Bearden Smith; sons
Clay K., Greg L. and Neal C. Smith, all of Salisbury; brother Alvin Smith, Vienna, Va.;
and five grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home
Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Thomas L.Griffis, pastor, First United Methodist Church, and
Dr. K.Tommy Nickerson, Charleston, S.C. The body was to be cremated.

Road, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Community Hospital, Springfield, Ohio.
Born June 10, 1914, in Stanly County, Mr. Parker
was a son of the late William Thomas and Inez Huneycutt Parker. He had retired as a
regional supervisor with Service Distributing Co. Inc. He was a member of Pine Grove
United Methodist Church. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific during World War
II.
His wife, Elizabeth Hall Whitlock Parker, died
June 7, 1981,
Survivors include son Eugene W. Parker, Ocean Isle
Beach; daughter Diane P. Little, Springfield,Ohio; brothers Cletus, Craven and Edward
Parker, all of Albemarle; sisters Dorothy Hatley and Estelle Lambert, both of Albemarle;
four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

George Floyd Perry
George Floyd Perry, 64, Salisbury, died Wednesday
(Aug. 4, 1999) at his home.
Born March 20, 1935, in Rowan County, he was
reared by Henry and Melrose Nix. Educated in the Rowan County and Georgia schools, he had
retired after 32 years with Fiber Industries, now KoSa.A Lutheran, he was a veteran of the
U.S. Navy.
Survivors include wife Peggy Gaskey Perry, whom he
married July 1, 1956; daughter Sherry Milam, Sutherlin, Va.; brothers Ronnie McClure,
Rockwell, and Sonny Perry, Griffin,Pa.; sister Yvonne Perry, Atlanta; two grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
