Nora McCombs

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Nora McCombs, 93, Kannapolis, who died Tuesday (Aug. 3, 1999) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 6, 1906, in Rowan County, Miss McCombs was a daughter of the late Charles V. and Mary Brown McCombs. She was a member of Kimball Lutheran Church.

She was a 1923 graduate of Kannapolis High School; a 1924 graduate of Mount Amoena Seminary,Mount Pleasant, where she was a business major; a 1929 graduate of New Charlotte Sanatorium, Charlotte, where she studied nursing; and a 1934 graduate ofLutheran Deaconess Motherhouse, Baltimore.

She joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 1935 and during World War II served in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps. Miss McCombs later served as head nurse at the National Lutheran Home for the Aged in Washington, D.C., and nurse, deaconess and house mother at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Lou Ella Harmon Barlow

KANNAPOLIS — Lou Ella Harmon Barlow, 92, formerly of 305 Bost St., died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Evergreen Retirement Center, Greensboro, after five months of declining health and two days of serious illness.

Born June 1, 1907, in Cleveland County, Mrs. Barlow was a daughter of the late Charles R. and Anna Keller Harmon. In her earlier years she worked at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, as a secretary. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she formerly sang in the choir.

Her husband, J. Russell Barlow, died Nov. 25, 1991.

Survivors include son John R. Barlow II, Greensboro; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman, the Rev. Wendy Shenk-Evans and Sarah Weaver. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Alfred Eugene Thompson

The funeral will be Friday for Alfred Eugene Thompson, 62, 1424 Bringle Ferry Road, Apartment 15, who died Sunday (Aug. 1, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 6, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late Andrew White and Laura Mae Thompson. A graduate of Aggrey Memorial High School, he had retired from Hoechst Celanese. He drove a taxi for Safety Taxi Co.

Survivors include sons Terry D.Thompson, Kannapolis, Stanford Ray Isom and Randy Michael Lane Thompson, both of Concord, and Keith Sherrill, Cleveland; daughters Cynthia Darlene Thompson and Charlene AnnetteThompson, both of Salisbury, Cathy Renea Beatty, China Grove, Alfreda Similton, Gastonia, KimTerry, Mocksville, Lori Denise Tay, Greensboro, and Lisa Grier, Concord; 27 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday,Oakwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev.Randy M.Thompson.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday, Rowan Funeral Service. The body may be view Friday through visitation time.

 

Glenn Caldwell Lowder

LANDIS — Glenn Caldwell Lowder, 78, 114 Valley St., died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after a year of declining health.

Born June 5, 1921, in Stanly County, Mr. Lowder was a son of the late Claude C. and Lillie Coble Lowder. He was a graduate of Cannon High School, Kannapolis, and Devy Electrical School, Chicago. An electrical mechanical technician, he had retired from Cope’s Vulcom Co., Charlotte. He was a charter member of Landis Fire Department and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher. During World War II, he was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors include wife Ethel Castor Lowder; sons Glenn C. Lowder Jr. and Mark A. Lowder, both of Salisbury, and Phillip A. Lowder, Landis; sister Ailene Huffman, China Grove; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Graham Nahouse. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis.

Memorials: Trinity Lutheran Church, 108 W. Rice St., Landis, N.C. 28088.

 

Kirby Neal Smith

Kirby Neal Smith, 78, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Sophie Ross Williams

Sophie Irene Ross Williams, 93, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a month of serious illness.

Born May 23, 1906, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late Charles and Laura Cauble Ross. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired from Parkdale Mills. She was a member of Parkdale Mills Baptist Church.

Her husband, Ed Frances Williams, died April 11, 1975. Her daughter, Ilia Mae Williams, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Edward Junior Williams, China Grove, and Robert Williams, Spencer; sisters Marie Hudson, Faith, and Hazel Chamberlin, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ricky Brown, pastor, Southside Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Edward Junior Williams, China Grove.

 

Jack C. Athey

COOLEEMEE — Jack C. Athey, 64, U.S. 801 South, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 1999) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, from a sudden illness.

Born Dec. 11, 1934, in Cooleemee, Mr. Athey was a son of the late John Leroy and Mollie Creason Athey. He had retired from Hoechst Celanese after 30 years with the company. He was a member of Cooleemee PresbyterianChurch and a charter member of Cooleemee Volunteer Fire Department. A former Jaycee, he was also a charter member of Yadkin Valley Motorcycle Club.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Rilla Lowder Athey; daughters Leann Athey Dodd, Cooleemee, and Amanda Marie Athey, Charlotte; sisters Earline Page, Mocksville, and Jean Phelps, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3:30 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park,Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Robert Goforth and Robert Creason.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday until the time of the service at Eaton Funeral Service, Mocksville.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, c/o Pauline Athey, P.O. Box 27, Cooleemee, N.C. 27014.

 

S. Ellsworth Nothstine

MOCKSVILLE — The Rev.S. Ellsworth Nothstine, 92, Mocksville, died Thursday (Aug. 5, 1999) at Brian Center Nursing and Rehabilitation, Statesville.
