Miller, Hardin and Hunter raise the most in school board race

Published 3:02 am Saturday, November 1, 2014

The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education candidate financial reports uncover a story of extremes.

Richard Miller, Phil Hardin and Dean Hunter brought in close to $10,000 each between monetary and in-kind donations and loans, while three candidates — Lawrence Helms, Jean Kennedy and W.F. Owens spent less than $1,000 on their campaigns.

Dean Hunter brought in the most in financial and in-kind contributions — just over $9,000. Seven of those were from other counties and 13 donors were from Rowan County and Kannapolis each.

Miller is the biggest spender of the group, spending $8,898.85 — most of which came from an $8,500 loan from himself. He spent $6,885 on billboards, $1,700 on radio advertisements and $1,550.43 on yard signs.

Hardin wasn’t far behind Miller in the large personal loan department. He issued himself a loan for $8,000.

Overcash had perhaps the most interesting expenditure on his finance report — $590 for sunflower seeds in packets with his name on them to pass out at the poles.

Here’s a list of the Board of Education candidates and their campaign totals and contributors who donated $100 or more. If no town is listed, the contributor is from Salisbury. All loans were personal loans issued by the candidates to provide money for their own campaign.
