On Oct. 17, during halftime of the Lexington and Salisbury High School game, Anna Harrell and Jeffrey Burton were selected as homecoming queen and king.

Harrell and Burton, who goes by J.C., have been friends since they met at North Hills Christian School in kindergarten. They were 5 years old when they met.

“It’s an honor to know that my peers voted for me and thought that I deserved to win,” Harrell said. “J.C. and I have been really good friends for a long time, and even though we went to different schools at one point, we still kept up with each other,” she added.

Harrell and Burton both have November birthdays, which allowed them to hold a joint “sweet sixteen” celebration.

“About 130 people came to our party last year and we are planning a Halloween party right now,” Burton said.

“Our colleges are not that far apart, so we will be able to stay in touch. She is my best friend,” Burton added.

Harrell is the daughter of Will and Bonnie Harrell. She is president of the Key Club, vice president of the A.W.A.R.E. club, a member of the track team, and member of the National Honor Society.

She plans to attend the University of North Carolina in Charlotte and major in biology, and later attend medical school to become a doctor.  Her dream is to travel to under-developed countries and provide medical attention to those in need.  She was escorted by Luke Humble, the son of Robert and Ali Humble.

J.C. Burton is the son of Jeff and Carmen Burton. He is vice president of the Student Government Association, member of the National Honor Society, sports editor of the yearbook, captain of the football team and captain of the wrestling team.  J.C. plans to attend Davidson College and major in pre-medicine.  He plans to become a doctor.
