Salisbury’s volleyball season ended with a 3-0 loss at Polk County on Tuesday in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

Juliana Anderson had eight kills for the Hornets (15-11). Breya Philpot had three kills and two blocks. Abby Lee had eight digs.  and Rebecca Malloy had five. Lora Withers had 10 assists, while Mary Seifert had eight.

• SPC champ Cox Mill lost for the first time on Tuesday when it was swept by North Henderson in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Prep soccer

Brandon Flores scored three goals in Carson’s 9-0 SPC win over East Rowan on Tuesday.

Carson  (17-2-1, 13-1-1 SPC) clinched its second straight South Piedmont Conference championship.

Khalid Myers scored twice. Raunel Vasquez, Colton Correll, Silvestre Lopez  and Braxton Rogers had  a goal each. Flores, Myers, Vasquez, Lopez, and Ricky Maldonado had assists.

Carson finishes the regular season at Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday.

Prep tennis

Carson’s girls lost 9-0 at Weddington in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Tuesday.

The Cougars went 10-3.

• SPC champ Cox Mill advanced to the third round of the 3A playoffs with a 5-3 win against North Iredell on Tuesday.

• West Davidson  (19-3) defeated Surry Central 5-3 on Tuesday in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

Winning singles matches were Olivia Varner, Rachel Trexler, Rachel Salinas and Casey Coble.  The doubles team of Trexler-Hannah Shawley won to clinch the match.

West Davidson plays in the third round at undefeated Lake Norman Charter on Oct. 28.

Prep football

The AP polls were released on Tuesday.

Top-ranked teams are Richmond County (4A),  Southern Durham (3A), Southwest Onslow (2A) and Wallace-Rose Hill (1A).

Still unbeaten in 1A are Mt. Airy, Wallace-Rose Hill and Robbinsville.

Still unbeaten in 2A are  Ashe County, Franklin, East Lincoln, Elizabeth City Northeastern, Black Mountain Owen and Southwest Onslow.

3A unbeatens are Crest, Concord, Eastern Alamance, Erwin, Freedom (one tie), Lee County, Orange, Southern Durham and Southern Guilford. Concord is ranked fourth.

Unbeaten in 4A are Dudley, Wilmington Hoggard, Independence, Mooresville, North Davidson, West Forsyth, Richmond, Fayetteville 71st, Wake Forest and New Bern. Mooresville is ranked seventh, while West Forsyth is ranked eighth. Mallard Creek is tied for fourth.

Local golf

Sixty-eight GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior on Monday.

Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 62.25 was David Scearce. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 62.07 was Clive Mahaffey. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 61.42 was David Adams. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 58.58 was Ralph Luther.

• The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf League played a Crier’s Tourney (the three worst holes are moved back to par) on Tuesday. In Flight 1, Becky Isenhour won low gross, while Phyllis Durland won low net. In Flight 2, Ruth Bowles won low gross, with Faye Cline second. Carolynn Ries won low net, with Bev Cobb second.

In Flight 3, Louise Collins won low gross, while Joy Maughmer won low net.

College volleyball

Catawba lost 27-25, 25-13 and 25-17 to seventh-ranked Wingate in SAC volleyball on Tuesday. Wingate is 22-1 and 15-0 in the SAC.

Abby Saehler had nine kills for the Bulldogs.

Erin Morant had seven kills to lead Catawba.

• Livingstone lost 25-20,25-21 and 25-20 to Fayetteville State.  LaPria Saunders had 18 assists for the Blue Bears.

College football

Livingstone had CIAA players of the week for the 21-20 win against Shaw.

Kenneth White was the CIAA Linebacker of the Week. He had three tackles for loss and an interception.

CIAA Receiver of the Week Jalen Hendricks had 15 catches for 212 yards and a touchdown.

The Blue Bears are at Winston-Salem State Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

• Washington and Lee inside linebacker John Carrick was named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week.

A sophomore from Charlotte, Carrick helped the Generals get their first victory of the season in a 28-25 win against Randolph-Macon. Carrick had two interceptions in the fourth quarter and made five tackles. Carrick’s interception with seven seconds left sealed victory.

Carrick is the son of former Catawba player Ken Carrick and has family in Salisbury.

Stanly Hall of Fame

Recently inducted into the Stanly County Hall of Fame were Albemarle High and Campbell basketball star Brad Childress and former South Stanly and Wingate baseball star Jeff Waisner.

Childress’ high school team went 30-1 in 1986, with the only loss coming to eventual  state champ North Rowan in the Western Regional final.

Gary Hahn, voice of the N.C. tate olfpack, was the keynote speaker, while Bob Harris, voice of the Duke Blue Devils, served as master of ceremonies.

Halloween Dash

The Hurley YMCA Cross Country Halloween Dash will be held Saturday at Salisbury Community Park.
