KANNAPOLIS — David H. Murdock will announce an ongoing gift Tuesday to the research institute that bears his name.
Murdock, the founder of the N.C. Research Campus, chairman and CEO of Dole Food Co. and owner of Castle & Cooke, will make the announcement at 10 a.m. in the Core Laboratory on the life sciences research campus.
Last year, Murdock pledged $50 million to the David H. Murdock Research Institute. That money was used to update equipment in six laboratories and underwrite the initial work of developing independent research programs in diabetes, metabolomics and cardiovascular disease.
The “gift in perpetuity” Murdock is to announce Tuesday will be used to support operational expenses and recruit top scientific talent, a media advisory said.
Murdock established the not-for-profit David H. Murdock Research Institute as the flagship and core laboratory facility for the N.C. Research Campus. The institute offers a broad range of advanced technologies to campus partners and corporate, academic, nonprofit and government collaborators around the world.
Since establishing the N.C. Research Campus in 2005, Murdock has personally invested more than $800 million, the media advisory said. The campus is home to 20 academic, industry, technology and health care partners all focused on research advancing human health, nutrition and agriculture.
