Patten-Miller House has planned additional events for Susan Wright Beard’s novel, “You Can’t Be That.” The book won the Independent Publisher Book Award for Best Religious Fiction. Events will be at Scuppernong Books in Greensboro on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.; Park Road Books in Charlotte on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.; and Literary Bookpost in Salisbury on Nov. 28, 6-9 p.m. Beard also had a May 10 signing at the Literary Bookpost.
“You Can’t Be That” is the story of a rural, aging Southern Baptist congregation that calls a young woman as their pastor and then works with her to find new ways of understanding and showing God’s love in the modern world. This story is written for the average church member who is struggling to accept new ideas in their own denomination as well as from society as a whole.
Beard, of Salisbury, was raised a Southern Baptist and graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with a master’s in religious education. She also has a master’s in social work from Louisiana State University. She is now Presbyterian and married with two children and four stepchildren.

The Friends of the Stanly County Public Library will have Jenny Hubbard, young adult author, as the featured speaker for the 2014 author dinner, which will be Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
Hubbard is the author of “Paper Covers Rock” and “And We Stay.” Reservations may be purchased by mail or in person at Stanly County Public Library, 133 E. Main St., Albemarle. Tickets are $15 for members of the Friends and $17 for non-members. Reservations must be made by Sept. 19.

Carl Nordgren will sign his first novel, “The 53rd Parallel,” on Sept. 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Literary Bookpost.
The book is the first in the River of Lakes series. The story is about a man and woman fleeing West Ireland in the 1950s and their journey to the wilderness of Northern Ontario, where old and new challenges test them.
