SALISBURY — After the city had what officials call an overwhelmingly positive response to public art installed at Interstate 85 and East Innes Street last spring, Salisbury is preparing to go even bigger.
In the next two weeks, the city’s Public Art Committee will install a unique four-piece sculpture in the four quads of the interchange.
Robert Winkler created the piece “Salisbury Foursome,” the final installation in the 2014 Salisbury Sculpture Show. The show includes 14 works of art placed temporarily in outdoor locations convenient to pedestrians and motorists.
Winkler said the intent of his work is to engage the public, and he imagines people walking or driving past and around his outdoor sculptures and seeing a different view from each angle as the pieces appear to move and change form.
People who want to tour the show can start with the Winkler sculptures and then proceed to the Rowan County Convention & Visitor’s Center at 204 E. Innes St., where colorful brochures will guide a walking tour and provide a brief description of each piece of art and its creator.
There are 12 sculptures within walking distance. The final stop on the tour is in the courtyard of the Student Services Building at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
The Salisbury Public Art Committee was created by the Community Appearance Commission and Downtown Salisbury Inc. in 2003 to interpret Salisbury’s history through art on the streets and to make art accessible to all. 
Since beginning in 2008, the annual Sculpture Show has grown each year, with several pieces purchased for permanent installation. The show is paid for with grants and private donations.
The city will not close any lanes during installation of the Winkler work. Funding for the project has been provided by the Rowan Arts Council and private donations. Details about the Sculpture Show can be found at www.visitsalisbury.com or at Salisbury Sculpture Show on Twitter and Facebook.
