The Run It Down Alumni Basketball tournament will be held at North Rowan today and Saturday.

The event kicks off with a free basketball clinic for ages 5-15 that will be held in conjunction with the Nightcrawlers organization. The clinic is from 9:30-12:30.


First-round alumni games today are: Carson vs. Salisbury at 5:30, South Rowan vs. Lexington at 7:15, and North Rowan vs. Davie at 8:45. West Rowan plays A.L. Brown at noon on Saturday to complete the first round.

Players with pro experience, including South’s Carlos Dixon, Salisbury’s Shamari Spears, West’s Terris Sifford and North’s Bryan McCullough are expected to play, along with former prep and college stars.

Local golf

Bruce Rufty made a hole-in-one on No. 9 at Foxwood Golf Club on Thursday.

The shot was witnessed by Hank Hoffman and Dubbie Ketchie.

• Kannapolis’ Rick Lewallen tied for 22nd in the South Carolina Open, shooting 70-71-71 — 212. He finished 2-over.

East Rowan baseball

East Rowan’s 9U all-stars defeated Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., 8-4 on Wednesday in their first game of the Cal Ripken Baseball Southeast Regional in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

East’s 9s defeated Wilmington Supper Optimist 12-8 Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader for them.

East then lost to Giles County, Tenn., in the second game 12-8 to finish pool play 2-1.

East plays the No. 1 seed Manatee, Fla, today at 11 a.m. in the first round of the championship tournament.

• ER’s 10U all-stars beat Putnam County, Tenn., 7-4 Wednesday in their first game of the Southeast Regional in Matthews.

ER’s 10U all-stars lost to Sarasota, Fla., 5-4 in their second game but beat Laurinburg 10-4.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 5-4 in 13 innings at Hagerstown on Thursday.

Tyler Williams homered for Kannapolis.

• Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had two hits for Birmingham on Wednesday.

Wood bat leagues

Avery Rogers (Guilford, East Rowan) struck out the last two batters to end Kernersville’s 8-3 win against Fayetteville on Wednesday in the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.

• Rogers pitched the last inning Thursday as Kernersville won 10-3. He struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning.

Rogers has struck out 40 in 21 2/3 innings.

Ashton Fleming (East, Surry CC, Catawba) is batting .288 with 12 RBIs for the Bulldogs.

T.J. Wharton (Catawba) batted .299 with 15 RBIs for Kernersville before getting a chance to play in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox.

North football camp

North Rowan High football camp will be held on July 28-30 from 9 until noon daily.

The camp is for rising 3rd-8th graders.

The cost is $40.

Register the morning of the 28th and make checks payable to North Rowan Football.


American Legion

The North Carolina state tournament starts today at Lexington’s Holt-Moffitt Field.

Action starts at 9:30 a.m. with a Shelby team that is 34-1 taking on Hope Mills (19-4).

At 12:30, the Gaston Braves (24-3) battle Wilmington (24-6).

Area III champion High Point (26-6) plays Wayne County (16-7) at 4:30.

Host Davidson County (15-12) takes on Garner (26-5) in today’s finale at 7:30.

Wilmington has won back-to-back state titles.

SHS soccer camp

Salisbury soccer camp runs from July 28th-Aug. 1 from 9 until noon daily.

The camp costs $65 and includes a T-shirt.

All proceeds go directly to suppor SHS soccer and Salisbury athletics.

This camp unofficially begins Salisbury’s defense of its state title.

The Hornets open the season on Aug. 20 against Concord.

College football

Defending Conference co-champion Coastal Carolina University has been tabbed the favorite in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason football poll for the 2014 campaign, as voted by the League’s head coaches and media panel.

China Grove sign-ups

China Grove Youth Baseball and Softball fall registration is under way at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove.

Cost is $40 until Aug. 30.

Baseball: 5/6 Coach Pitch; 7/8 Pitching Machine; 9/10 Baseball, and 11/12 Baseball.

Softball: 5/6/7/8 group and 9/10/11/12 group.
