SALISBURY — Despite his daughter-in-law’s arrest for driving a stolen van, a man still was able to make his doctor’s appointment at the Hefner VA Medical Center Wednesday morning.
Salisbury Police Officer A.J. Bizzio stopped a green Kia van Wednesday at the corner of Brenner Avenue and Monroe Street after his check on the van’s license plate revealed the van had been reported stolen.
The van carried two people: driver Chanita Nicole Smith, 39, of Forbes Road, Gastonia, and a passenger, her father-in-law, who she was taking to an appointment at the VA hospital.
When Bizzio asked Smith if she knew why he was stopping her, she replied she suspected her tag came back as stolen.
Smith was handcuffed, searched and transported to the Police Department for processing, and she was charged with misdemeanor possession of stolen goods.
Her bond was set at $500, and a court date was set for Aug. 27. Meanwhile, officers made sure her father-in-law was taken to the VA for his appointment.
