Two East Rowan players were named to all-tournament teams at the Perfect Game World Wood Bat National Championships held in the Atlanta area.
East rising junior shortstop Ike Freeman, who has committed to UNC, went 11-for-20 with three doubles, eight runs and five RBIs in the 16U tournament to help the South Charlotte Panthers win their pool and advance to the playoff round of 32 in a 307-team event. The Panthers lost in extra innings in the round of 32 to the Indiana Outlaws.
Freeman is batting .376 (29-for-77) for the season with eight doubles.
The Panthers complete the summer segment of their season with regional events at College of Charleston and N.C. State the next two weeks.
• East rising senior pitcher Joe Peeler started and pitched six innings to earn a victory in pool play for the SC Panthers in the 17U tournament. Peeler alowed three hits and an unearned run while striking out eight.

Ellis shines
Brittany Ellis of the Rowan Express Track Club competed in the USATF Junior Olympics Regional held in Durham.
Ellis broke the meet record in the 8-under shot put with a throw of 21 feet, 4 inches. The previous record was 20 feet, 8 inches.
Ellis also placed first in the javelin with a throw of 56 feet, 1 inch. She was fourth in the long jump at 9 feet, 9 inches.

Alumni basketball and clinic
The alumni basketball tournament starts Friday at North Rowan.
A tournament pass is $10. Daily admission is $5.
There will be a dunk contest and 3-point contest on Sunday.
There will be a free basketball clinic at North on Friday from 9:30-12:30 in conjunction with the Nightcrawlers. The clinic is for ages 5-15.

Minor leagues
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) drove in three runs as Birmingham won at Jackonsville in the Southern League on Monday. Wagner hit a two-run homer, his second of the season.
• Corey Seager (NWC) has struck out five times in his first 10 Double-A at-bats for Chattanooga, but he has three hits. The Dodgers prospect tripled in his debut and had a single and double in his second outing.
• Justin Seager (NWC, Charlotte) has driven in a run in each of his last three games for Clinton, Iowa. He has 25 RBIs in 76 games.
• Whit Merrifield (Davie) had two hits for Omaha on Monday and is batting .359 in 38 games in Triple-A.

MLB
Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jerry Sands (Catawba) apparently will miss the rest of the season.
A tendon injury in Sands’ left wrist required surgery.
Sands was placed on the disabled list in late June.

Softball tournament
There will be a softball tournament at Royal Giants Park in East Spencer all day on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
Teams from Charlotte, Statesville and Rowan are entered.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice.
The team of Bryan Reynolds, David Huneycutt and Jay Crane took first place. Randy Honeycutt won longest putt.

Racing
In his Chicagoland Speedway ARCA Racing Series debut, Justin Allison (West Rowan) earned his fourth consecutive top-10 finish.
Allison started eighth and finished eighth.
He wa seventh when his car spun on the backstretch, causing the first caution of the race. No contact was made.
“The weekend could have gone better, but overall we did well and learned a lot,” Allison said.

College football
CIAA Media Day is Thursday in Durham.
Head coach Daryl Williams, quarterback Drew Powell and defensive lineman Hillman Evans will represent Livingstone’s Blue Bears, who open the season on the road at Millersville on Sept. 4.
