Many downtown storefronts were covered with modern-day facades when this photo of South Main Street in downtown Salisbury was taken in 1984. To get your bearings, you can see the Plaza, then called the Wallace Building, in the upper right. The Rack Room is still a familiar name, but some people might not recognize the other stores. Tobias was a women’s clothing store, Phil’s is where the Lerners sold shoes, Ruby’s carried wedding gowns and Purcell’s sold fine women’s apparel. This is where you’ll now find Innes Street Drug, Literary Bookpost, Salisbury Wine Shop and more. The original brickwork of the buildings was uncovered and restored once these facades came down.
