The Highway Patrol announces a preliminary number of seven motorists who died on North Carolina highways during the July 4th holiday period. In 2013, 14 people died. This year’s number resulted in a 50 percent reduction when compared to last year.
The holiday weekend officially began at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and ended at midnight, Sunday, July 6. Last year in North Carolina from July 3–7, 14 people died during the holiday period.
During the July 4th holiday period, troopers investigated seven fatal collisions resulting in seven deaths on North Carolina highways. The following is a breakdown of the location and highway of each fatality:
N.C. 41 (8.20 miles west of Lumberton)
U.S. 220 (2 miles south of Madison)
U.S. 74 (4.8 miles east of Bryson City)
Conetone Road (6.4 miles west of Bethel)
U.S. 21 (9.7 miles southwest of Yadkinville)
Taylor Springs Road (16.5 miles north of Statesville)
Friendship Rock Creek Road (7.2 miles south of Burlington)
