KANNAPOLIS — On Monday, May 26, the American Legion will host its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans Park, located at the corner of First and Main streets in downtown Kannapolis.
This year, in addition to the traditional program, a special presentation will be given to specifically honor Kannapolis World War II veterans and their families. All Cabarrus and Rowan County WWII veterans, their spouses and surviving spouses will be honored at the ceremony.
The event will officially commence at noon on Memorial Day with the procession of veterans into the park and opening remarks by Mayor Darrell Hinnant. Col. Quincy Collins will be the guest speaker. Following the ceremony, a private luncheon will be held for the WWII veterans and their families at the American Legion on South Main Street in Kannapolis.
The ceremony is open to the public, but seating is limited, so visitors should bring portable chairs, blankets and umbrellas in the event of inclement weather. Participants should arrive by 11:30 a.m. for preliminary activities. Parking will be available in the large lot across from the park on Main Street.
The veteran procession will begin at the Laureate parking deck at the N.C. Research Campus, arriving at Veterans Park via the front entrance. The southbound lane of Main Street, from Jackson Park to East First Street, will be closed during the procession.
Individuals interested in participating in the special WWII presentation are asked to contact Jimmy Wilson of the American Legion at 704-794-3417.
Veterans Park features pathways of engraved bricks celebrating patriotism and honoring men and women who have served. Brick sponsorships are available for purchase through Kannapolis Parks and Recreation.
