SALISBURY — The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce has revamped Leadership Rowan, adding social media, crisis communication, diversity training and other new topics to the line-up for the leadership program.
The deadline for applications is June 27.
Highly motivated individuals and existing leaders are encouraged to apply. One day a month for nine months, participants will get an in-depth view of community issues, develop skills necessary to assume leadership roles and are exposed to community involvement opportunities.
Leadership Rowan provides participants the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with key community leaders.
The 2014-2015 program will feature social media, public speaking, crisis communication, conflict management, media tours, grant funding, economic overview, how incentives work, entrepreneurial development and diversity issues and training.
Participants also will study the qualities that make an effective leader, analyze individual leadership roles and develop personal leadership styles and skills. They are challenged to apply their talents by joining professional associations, civic clubs, public boards and commissions.
Participants are required to attend the kickoff August 13 at 6:30 p.m. and a two-day, one-night out-of-town get acquainted retreat August 18 and 19. The nine program sessions will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, September through May. Full day attendance at all sessions is required.
Each session will be led by community leaders. Both the discussion leader and participants will be encouraged to speak from their experiences in political, social, cultural, education and economic facets of the community.
With a free exchange of ideas and experience, participants will develop a broadened understanding and appreciation of community organizations and needs.
A certificate will be awarded to those who complete the program. Participants should be willing to make a serious commitment. Employers must agree in advance to grant participants time off from their duties to attend the full day and prepare for the session. Graduates are required to be active participants in planning one session for the full day the following year.
Tuition for the program is $800 for chamber members and $1,125 for nonmembers. This fee will cover the retreat, program materials, meals and graduation ceremonies.
Tuition is payable no later than July 31. Limited financial assistance may be available.
The Leadership Rowan Selection Committee will screen applications. Companies are urged to sponsor individuals who have demonstrated potential as community leaders and who expect to remain in this area for at least the next two years.
